Maintenance on a K&N

I have the FIPK on my 2001 Excursion. It came with it and I don't have the Recharger service kit that is talked about in the instructions that I found online. Is there anything to do to this thing? I was planning on cleaning the truck on Friday and was going to take a look at the air filter.

Maintenance on a K&N

According to K&N these things don't have to be reoiled for 50-100k miles depending on conditions such as offroading dust. etc. If it doesn't look dirty I wouldn't bother with it. It should have a slight purplish tint to it indicating that the oil is still present. It's a good idea to check all the hardware on the intake system for fit and tightness, if you have the FIPK that is.:-)

Maintenance on a K&N

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 11-Apr-02 AT 02:14*AM (EST)]omnimax,
I have FIPK on my 2001 superduty and my experinces with them is when you decide to wash the engine compartment cover the filter with a small garbage bag and wire tie to pervent damage to the filter element, if you use high pressure water. the recharger kit can be bought at any auto zone or advance auto store for about $9.00 the filter needs to be cleaned about every 20-25000 miles all you do is wash it out and let it dry in the sun (DO NOT BLOW DRY WITH AIR )will blow filter in pieces ,and then spray the oil on it and take a paper towel and pat dry the excess oil and reinstall.

There are also several reported problems in the SuperDuty forum with K&N filter oil causing problems with the MAS, so if you do recharge it, don't put on any more oil than necessary. The MAS can be cleaned if it is not real bad, but prevention is better than the cure. More is not better when it comes to filter oil and a MAS!

Maintenance on a K&N

Don't over clean your K&N. It filteres *better* with some oil soaked dirt in the filter. It is also very easy to over oil it.

On my 98 SHO I had the MAF sensor become coated with oil and it hurt
performance. I was able to clean the wire *very carefully* and restore proper operation. Has Ford published and tech recomendations
on the V10 and oil based air filters? Is the MAS on the v10 a hot
wire? The hot wire units go through a cycle where they burn off
contamination every time the vehicle starts ind is in open loop
operation.
