catalytic heat shield rattle

The heat shield on the drivers side rattles at 1000 rpm...not at idle not at 1500...at 1000.

I grabbed the heat shield after starting up the engine...and of course the rattle stops.

i do not see any place to tighten up the heat shield..

it seems to be a waste to replace the cat because of the heat shield.

there does seem to be some space between the shield and the cat..

any thoughts of wedging a piece of steel in there to stop the rattle..

or any other solution..? maybe i am missing an area where there might be a bolt... it just seems that the shield is integrated with the cat.

Should have a bolt or two - might have rusted off - I had this on my 2002 F-150, 1994 E-150 and 2000 Mustang... get the picture...

I am going to jack up the truck and get a better look this weekend... we have been dealing with temps around 100.. it's just no fun working outside..even in the shade.

i also have the factory paper manuals... i'll see if i can find something there..

any other ideas appreciated..

thanks

All of mine had 2-4 fasteners that attached to either weld nuts or speed nuts. On both the van and the truck I had to cut off the speed nuts as the heads of the bolts had broken off and the shafts had rusted solid to the speed nuts. Pretty easy with dremel and a cut off wheel. I used grade 5 Stainless fasteners and speed nuts - no issues since.

Either take something and pry the heat shield off, or take a large hose clamp and use it to secure the heat shield to the cat.

now the clamp idea is interesting..

i'll look for bolts first....

that would be one big hose clamp...

probably would need something from a plumbing shop... they those big rubber Fernco's that have big clamps..

Plumbing stores or even the Home Depot has huge stainless steel clamps!

And if you can't get one big enough, buy 2 of the biggest you can find and put 'em together. It'll cost you $5 at the most.

Exhaust shops carry those big hose clamps specifically for that purpose. If you have a parts store that specializes in exhaust, they will have it in stock.

Just a thought. I had the same rattling on my 97 EXPY and it turned out to be a bolt that had come off the road and gotten in the shield.

Thanks posters for this thread!...have same problem with my exhaust rattling at off-idle throttle and will try to fix it with one of these suggestions! (Maybe the wife will stop complaining about wanting a new truck!)

well, i could be wrong.... but i don't think it is something inside...but there is room for something to get in there....

all of your thoughts and ideas are great.... i won't know more until i jack it up and see if there are bolts missing... if i can't spot bolts... i will surely clamp it... i like that idea a lot
