aftermarket fuel gauge

Going to be installing aftermarket gauges in the 69 with the rewire. What do I need to look for in a fuel gauge? Voltage requirements etc, thanks, Matt.

You should be able to purchase the proper unit by telling them "FORD" sending unit. It's all done with correct voltage, so it should be pretty easy to do.

That being said...........I'm sure that just because it's pre-70 all the rules go out the window LOL!!

You can purchase a new sending unit with the gage sets if you want, but I would get the fuel gage that is for fords.

I will be adding The golden oldies gages to my 68. I will use the ford set. They sell them to work with ford, gm, dodge .... All use a different ohm range.

What wiring harness are you going to use? Most mfg offer a pre-wired gage set harness. I would recommend that you use a connector to make insulation easier.

The only problem I see is the fact it's a truck tank, and the "new" generic sending unit might not work with it? Just a thought.

Most I have seen come with very long arms, and your cut them down to size. I don't know how your gage works, when my say "E", your one fumes. No reserve like most.

Thanks for the replies. I'm going with auto meter traditional chrome gauges throughout, new speedo, tach, oil pressure, water temp, volts and fuel.
I pulled an old dash out of the yard to use as a template to make a new backing panel for all the gauges.
I ordered everything from Summit and they gave me the ohm range for my truck, we'll see how it goes, hope to get started this weekend. Matt.

Does any one know if ford uses a shut resistor for the amp gage, Or did they run the main power though the gage.

When you take out your old panel, look at the amp gage wiring. If not 10ga wire it is using a shunt. You may want to by pass the shunt by moving both wires to the same post. Not sure where it located out. I know the instrument panel voltage reg is mounted on the panel.

I'm stuck between the Old Tyme and Golden Oldie. Will be mounted against Mahogony, into the gage bezel. I'm going to go with the electric speedo if they have the unit to work with my C6.

You should be able to do the install over the weekend. Go ahead and do your layout, while your waiting for the gages. Then all will have to do is drop it in. Since you have a instrument panel to work with go ahead and label the pin out. Will save you some time.

Keep us up to date on your experience/progress. Take plenty of pictures.
