I marked "other" for the same reason as 4x4x4x4. The exhaust system is the first thing to address on the V-10. I noticed a big difference with the Banks Stinger system. The headers and y-pipe will be installed next year. It makes more sense to me to open the intake and exhaust and let the engine breathe better before you chip it and expect the engine to work harder.

Right - you get max power and performance with the *lowest*
octane you can run in a non-knock-compensated engine without
any knocking. Very light knock is darn hard for most of us to
hear, however. In an engine with a knock sensor that pulls out
timing when the engine knocks, it is a little more complicated.
You then wnat to run the lowest octane you can without having the
ECU pull out any timing. Since you cannot easily tell, higher
octane is the easy way to get the most timing, and the most
power.
Is the v-10 set up to sense octane and pull timing?

daimon 1054 said; My truck would ping like mad with reg so I hade to go to the mid grade.
Prior to our Contour, my wife's 'car' was a Ranger 3.0 V6 w/a 5 spd. No matter WHAT we did, it would ping. Even with 92 octane fuel. The Ford dealers usual lame-@ss reply to why was "I dunno, everything checks out on the computer in normal parameters". My brother in laws Ranger 3.0 V6 5 spd has NEVER pinged, no matter what he puts in the tank. Same year, same make, same motor plant, same-o, same-o, same-o. Why the disparity ? My 98 V-10 runs like a sumbatch, my brother-in-laws 2001 V-10 runs good, but I could put 15 people in my van and SMOKE him 0-60 even if he was alone in his truck. I drove his, and couldn't believe he had a V-10. He drove mine, and came back wide-eyed and with his mouth hanging open. He could not believe the difference in power and giddy-up and go. I wonder what the reason for this is. It's been around since the beginning of time.

Just to clarify, I couldn't tell any real difference (except when towing) between 87 & 93 octane when my truck was stock. Now, with the Powerpack, I have a slight rattle (under load) with 87 and, as I said before, mileage is sucking. Still going to try another tank of 87 to see if this is just a one-time problem or if 90+ octane is forever in my future. The higher octane fuel is only about $5/tank extra, so it's not a big deal considering the amount of miles that I drive.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 19-Jul-02 AT 05:29 PM (EST)]Damion - right on the knock sensor. Engines do not
directly sense octane but sense the result of low
octane - knocking. Regarding 87 octane, the 3.0l V-6 Ford SHO
and 3.4l V-8 SHO have knock sensors and are both designed
to run *premium*. I bet you are thinking of them a Yamaha and
not Ford engines?

The 4.6 DOHC in the Cobra at least is premium only as well. Im willing to bet that the DOHC in all its incarnations is the same as well... Not that that has anything to do with this post...

All computer controled motors have knock sensors, HI-PERFORMANCE motors use high comperssion and advanced timming. That is why they need the good stuff. If you add a chip, most systems do nothing more than advance timming so then you need top dino for that. (yes the chip changes other things but the biggest gain is from timing)
