Banks PowerPack System

Well here goes, I was asked to share my experience with the Banks system. I am running a 99 v-10 in a 36 foot class a motorhome. I was satisfied with the stock performace as long as I was doing short trips. I was intimidated by diesels running over me so I went for performace. And did I pick it up when I bit the bullet and put the PowerPack on this monster rig. I was getting a decent 7.8 mpg and able to cruise 70 in most cases. I had done a top end of 80 on a flat run. After the PowerPack with the Transcommand, I get 8.9 mpg with a top end of 100, and I can climb with the best pulling my Jeep cherokee or my s-10 blazer. It seems that the torque curve has changed to a lower rpm, as stock it is around 4200, with the Banks it seems to be in the 35-3700 range.i Fully loaded I weigh out at 27,000. I have scaled it on 3 ocassions at Flying J's. I have been running the Banks system for over 60,000 miles and have nothing but praise for this technology. The quietness of the engine along with the performace, especially torque, is quite noticable. When the Banks was installed, they also ran a 5 inch pipe from the cat thru the muffler and out the left side, all stainless steel. After I found this new found performance, I then changed plugs to the Platnium plus by Bosch, again noticable performace gain. I then had the infamous blown spark plug, I had the heads for 2000 models installed, and wow, more gain in torque. I have never dyno'd this rig, I just know when I step into the pedal, towing, I am at 70 in no time. The Transcommand is quit noticable in shifting as it is quit hard and positive. I justified the expense because I travel a lot. A weekender or a 1 time a year trip, no way. Well, there it is. A fully satisfied v-10 lover with toys attached. Sorry to be so windy!!

Wow, Great info. Asking a V-10 to haul 27,000 lbs is asking a lot. Even more with a toad.

Any info on before and after HP, 0-60? The top speed is a huge differeence on peak hp, since the CF on a Class A motorhome is very high. Was that top speed gain under the same conditions? It would be a BIG hp gain to go from 90 mph to 100 mph. Very big.

Do you know your final gear on that rig?

I do not have any info on HP before the upgrade. Ford says 295 for 99 and prior, 315 in the 2000 models due to head re-engineering, but you know how that goes. Torque is what I have noticed. I was not expecting the gains in performance that I experienced.

As for top speed, I made sure I was under the same conditions, even the same road. I made sure I even filled up with fuel at the same station. I was using 87 oct fuel. I had just changed the oil and cleaned the K&N air filter. Before the upgrade I was just messing around to find the top end. And actually the same after. Never expected this. Again, I was and still impressed, in fact its a pleasure to be at 70 and step into it with the toad and pass with ease. I am getting ready to do the same on my 99 Expy. IF I get anything near this increase in performace, I will be totally maxed.

I've got the PowerPack with Transcommand and Ottomind on my '00 Ex. It sure made a difference in throttle response. It was a bit pricey, however the headers are made to last. I even had the headers and y-pipe ceramic coated to further increase longevity, and to help keep the heat out from under the hood.

Have Fun,

Did you have your infamous spark plug blow-out, after you had your PowerPack installed. And if so, did the dealer give you any warranty grief because of the Power-Pack being installed on your rig?
Thanks,

Nope, not a problem at all. Since I had the Power Pack put on by an authorized installer, not myself, there was no reprocussions. The plug change that I did prior to the blow out, seemed to be the problem as the blame was put on me for incorrect torque by the service manager. But they could not prove that either. I did torque the plugs to a 15-18 ft lbs. The service manager checked the other plugs and they all checked to the specs. He didn't say much after that. Ford covered the head as I cover half the labor. It all worked out.....
