Bad V10's?
Firstly guys, my apologies for the above post. I should have done my homework, I have spent hours looking through the posts on this site and thank you all for the wealth of information contained within.
I have obviously been mis-informed as the only problems I see are the blowing plug problem (loose plug by the sound of it) and the fuel pump wire problem. That one is a gem . Thanks for passing the info on.
Also thanks to the moderator for putting the post in the right department, once again just found your site and didn't look properly before posting
You guys made up my mind and I rang the guy this afternoon and brought it!! The only problem is I have to wait 6 to 8 weeks to get it (I'm in New Zealand) and with gas at around $1.20 per litre running it ain't going be cheap but with the country being full of Japanese oil burner "trucks" , its going to be worth it just for the look on their faces!!
Just one "sensible" question, the minimum octane rating of our gas here is 92 and premium is 96. Do you think there would be any problems running this higher octane fuel in the V10's
Thank you and sorry again about the above post.
GREAT site !!!!!

Higher octane certainly won't hurt anything. Do you know which method is used to compute octane? There are two and our US ratings are based on an average of the two. (R+M)/2 or some such. If you use a different method you might have a lower rating on the same fuel by US formula.

A BUCK-TWENTY A QUART ????? Wowzers, probably not an over-abundance of V-10's running around down under is there ? Geez, $4.50 a gallon even for minimum 92 octane ? I guess parts of Europe are the same. I have a pal in England who drives a Toyota-something with a 1.3 liter, non-turbo diesel. He says he measures his 0-60 time with a calender !
My 98 V-10 has almost 70K on it, and other than a little lifter tick when she's cold I couldn't be happier with it. It's smooth, torquey and loves to rev, although keeping it up in the revs certainly affects gas mileage alot more than any other Ford engine I have ever owned, and I believe I have had every Ford engine made in the last 50 years, including diesels. I heard that 2/3's of all 3/4 and 1 ton pick-ups sold in the U.S. have Power Strokes in them. With the remaining 1/3 being V-8's and V-10's.
It takes a special kind of person to drive a V-10. You have to be a leader, not a follower. You have to have a vision, a quest. You have to want to be different, to set your sights and your goals higher than your average, everyday Joe. Welcome to the V-10 owners board ! You have found a site with great people, who have lots of knowledge about not just Ford V-10's, but about many things mechanical and non-mechanical. Keep us posted as to your thoughts and impressions when your new truck arrives. I'm interested in knowing what your countrymen think of it also. Thanks for writing, Ken

All very true. It's also useful to have a couple of gas, (BP?), credit cards.

Yea buddy, that V-10 will pass darn near everything, except a gas station.
One thing I have noticed particularly with the V-10 is a wide variation in owner satisfaction. Guys either love them, or hate them. My brother in law has 3 of them. 2 of them he loves, and 1 of them he hates. I drove all of them, the one he hates I see why. It feels like the exhaust is plugged. It won't rev, it has no power, on and on. Of course he's had it to the dealer numerous times, only to get the dreaded "it checks out on the computer within normal parameters". I've never had a new Chev or a new Chrysler, so I can't compare dealers, but the total apathy I've found at most Ford dealers leaves MUCH to be desired. I would bet you that a Ford dealer who cared about his service customers would have more sales customers than he could deal with. Why don't dealership owners get that ? I see here in Portland Oregon more and more dealerships being owned by conglomerates. They may own 15 different dealerships along with clothing, grocery or whatever stores. But you'd think even a mgr, who's paid from the bottom lione would figure out that happy service customers come back for their new vehicles. The biggest Ford dealership here in the Portland Metro area will NEVER see a dime of my money based on how horribly they treated my wife and I when we were trying to find out why her truck (Ranger, 3.0 V-6, 4X4 5 spd) would ping non-stop. They could have cared less about us, consequently that sentiment was directed right back at them when it was time to buy our next couple of Fords, even though they were offering $0 down and $0 a month forever PLUS you got to keep the dealer kick-back of $7 grand AND a free trip to Maui (these guys are always famous for incredibly good deals that somehow nobody ever gets once you get inside the dealership, it's called Vancouver Ford, in Vancouver Wash. DO NOT shop there).

Excellent point about the octane computation method, HiTech. I was thinking that very point later that day but did not remember to ask about it until your post jarred my memory.
Here in the US we use the "RON (Research Octane Number) + MON (Motor Octane Number) divided by 2 method". To arm yourself with a bit of info, check [link:www.osbornauto.com/octane.htm|this] out.

Am sure glad to hear someone else's opinion about the largest Ford dealer here in the Vancouver/Portland area, namely Vancouver Ford. I bought my '91 & the problem I had w/them would fill a book. Neve went back to them for any service after they created more problems both times I went in there. I check them again last Sept. to buy my '02 SD, suprise, suprise....the hadn't changed a lick! Drove clear to Longview Wa. to deal with a dealer who apprreciated my biz. So far Northside Ford has been great.

Ah yes, Columbia Ford in Longview Wash. Great store, great people. The Sari family still owns that I believe. I bot new there; new 93 AWD Aerostar, used 86 F-250 4WD 6.9 w/ATS turbo, new 95 F-150 4WD 300 6 cyl SC, new 91 F-150 4WD 5.0 5 speed. Suburban Ford in Sandy Or has been good to deal with also, and their service dept used to be good, it may still be, I dunno. I bought there; new 1993 F-350 crew cab 4WD 7.3 IDI diesel E4OD, new 1996 F-250 4WD SC PSD E4OD, used 98 E-350 V-10 ClubWagon and new 99 Contour SE 2.0 liter ATX. I haven't tried Northside Ford yet, but will talk to them next time I buy a rig. My brother in law owns an electrical contracting business and I buy all his vehicles for him, which is a couple a year. So I deal with lots of Ford dealers.

There are a few good Ford dealers out there. Our local dealer (Harper Ford) in Eureka, California, is celebrating their 90th (yup.. 90 years in the same location) anniversary. They drove out to Eureka, in 1912, and set up the dealership, that is family owned, then and now, (even the same family). Service is excellent! Part peoples know their stuff, (not 'order takers', but real "part-guys"), sales people are great, the general manager that runs the show, puts YOU first, before anything else. Never a warranty question, loaner car--no problem, the $21.50 oil change, includes a detail job that is worth $50.00 IMO, a top notch dealer. It sure is nice to have a good one, with all the sub-standard ones out there.
Heck we get up to Hillsboro, OR, all the time (in-laws). I'd gladly drive say, a new 2003 Ford Mustang Cobra up for you if you like :^)
BTW--thanks again for the Kenne Bell information (I sure want a supercharged V10)

Oh YEAH BABY, a new THREE HUNDRED NINETY HORSEPOWER Cobra !! Now we're talking ! That alongside a Supercharged V-10 in my driveway, GADZOOKS !! I'd feel like I'd died and gone to Heaven !
You're welcome for the Kenne Bell stuff, glad to oblige. I love to promote good companies and I've always thought Kenne Bell was a good company based on the conversations we've had over the years.
We have a fairly good Ford dealer or two out here too, namely Columbia Ford in Longview Wash, and Suburban Ford in Sandy Oregon. But of course they are both way out of the metro area so it always take lots of planning if you need some warranty work done.
