16hrs on motor, 465 miles, 1st regen..1180RPM
Was sitting in a car wash when it went off...So should I not be idling while sitting for what period of time 5-10 min? I was under the understanding it was better for the diesel to idle than turn on / turn off???? But with this regen, it would seem to be better to just turn off so no accumulation of soot occurs. Any thoughts???

It is not recommended to let your diesel idle. The new style engines with egr and dpf
will soot up from the cooler exhaust temperature increases deposit formation on
egr valves and filters.I have seen 6.0L that have been idled for extended periods
build deposits on the egr so bad that it would cause the engine to surge. When sitting at a light,I've had it push the truck out into the intersection, even while hard on the
brakes.I would not recommend idling more than 10 minutes. It also is fuel that you
are burning doing nothing, which hurts your overall fuel mileage.
The best thing for these trucks is to work the engine, hard.then after you park, let
it idle for about three minutes to cool the turbos down to prevent oil coking in the
turbo. No matter how you run the truck, there will always be soot formation, but
excessive idling will cause the buildup faster.

I understand the regenation process... But should you just let these idle like other diesels or turn it them off if just sitting..Maybe I'm just thinking CAT diesels where they run all day long..Just read the above message...DO not let idle for more than 10 min???? Got it....3 min cool down after work out...
Thank you....
Thank you....

Even the new commecial truck engines I work with (Volvo,Mack,Cummins)do not
recommend extended idle periods when equipped with the egr and dpf systems.
We do have problems with the regen on like oil field trucks that sit and idle.
Older diesel trucks were left idling because they took more fuel to start (6v71 detroits,
and the like)The more modern engines have improved starting no days. The trucks I
work on don't even have glow plugs.
