you really should get gauges..at least the pyro...a chip or tunser will raise the EGT's pretty damn fast at WOT..

Cruising around town and on the highway and such you'll be fine, but any kind of towing or racing or anything, you'll need at least a pyro.

Anything above safe 80hp tune guages are a must! EGT anyway, This is the way you have to look at it, would I rather spend 200 bucks now to monitor EGT or spend several thousand latter because you THOUGHT it was safe! The choice is yours. I ran an 80hp superchip for 6 yrs with no Issues, once I put an EGT guage in and ran the truck (hard) I found out the my EGTs offten hit 1200+ deg, any higher than 1250-1300 for more than a few seconds and you start doing damage to the turbo! I was lucky I never damaged anything, Ive herd some of the tunning companies say that you can use 60hp tune safely!

Sorry to hijack, but does the DP tuner change or stiffen you shifts or does it only adjust the engine parameters?

Those same tuning companies going to pay for your repairs too? Of course they will tell you that you don't need gauges. Otherwise you might balk at the final price of the mod. Either that or the tunes are so watered down that they are almost like stock. I know that on Jody's 60HP Tow tune I hit 1200 real easy especially when towing. Jody didn't want me to go with an 80 HP Tow tune because I would either fry my motor or have to throttle back very often.

I'm not so worried about the turbo as I am of the pistons. Too hot and they get soft and blow out.

Well, without a valve body, I don't think they can stiffen it much but IIRC, they do stiffen it a little. I'd get the VB so it doesn't slip as much and the DP tuner programs

I don't have a valve body yet, and it definitely has stiffened the shifts.

BTS What? I am getting my regulated fuel system and BTS Big Oil at the end of the month.

BTW, only one way to improve the trans after the VB. I know. I have the trans too.

BTS VB. My tranny is doing fine so far. It just turned 70k this weekend so I hope to have many more enjoyable miles out of it before taking the big plunge and getting the whole BTS tranny.

With tuning I run about 65 above ambient temps. With stock tunes I run about 50 above ambient. Why the difference? Because I keep sticking my foot in it with the 80 Econo. With the stock trans, I ran about 75 above ambient on stock tune. I swear that BTS puts a refridgerator in the trans somehow. Probably has a few cans of beer too. That is how he gets his trans to run so cool. BTW, this was in 95 deg stop and go traffic

The EGT (exhaust gas temperature) gauge is technically called a PYROmeter. WOT= Wide Open Throttle, however that's inaccurate for a diesel as they do not have throttles. I prefer to use the term Full Fuel.

15/92, high exhaust temperatures do not hurt the turbo. At least 1300* wont. It's the aluminum pistons that get abused during high temp operations, as pure aluminum melts at 1228*.
