The new diesels have a particulate filter for emissions purposes. You would have to change them out VERY often if not for the regen cycle. The computer determines when a cycle is necessary and a small amount of fuel is added to the filter to burn the particulate at a very high temp. ( MY understanding of it anyways...)

Not to be a butt, but don't you have an owner's manual?

That is the regen cycle. If the truck is stoped w/o your foot on the break it will idle between 1200-1500 rpm, varying occasionaly. It can and does occur when the truck it moving, that is the best time because it wastes less fuel. Next time it happens when you're stopped go to the tail pipe and stand about 5 feet away, if it's in regen it's gonna feel like a leaf blower pushing 600 degree air. Watch where that pipe points, I've already blistered someones paint........I swear I parked first then they parked way too close to me.

yep thats what its doing...its annoying as hell to me..i seen some people on here talking about a tuner and exhaust that will remove that...if all works good you can bet i'll have one...also my truck seems like it is running kindof sluggish...i hear all these guys saying that their SD is so fast and are in love with it...i don't know if its just me or what but i'm not real impressed with mine..it doesn't come out of the whole good at all and it just doesn't seem like its running to its full potential...should i have my pcm flashed?? any ideas or suggestions??

My 08 was a little sluggish for the firs 1500 miles or so. Now it has 4500 miles on it, and runs a lot better.

First few thousand miles the truck just needs to loosen up. They do get much faster! I can break my rear duals loose in 1st, and chirp them all the way up to 4th.

And yes the regen cycle is annyoing as hell. I don't know what you do but it seems you don't like it because of the time it takes to complete or just the annoying idle speed. But people like me that work our trucks hard while off-road in tall grass, that's another story. I'm afraid of driving my rig around my ranch because if this thing goes into regen the place will go up like a match. I've heard people say that it doesn't get hot enough to start fires, but I've seen many started by catalytic converters and these DPFs get MUCH hotter than the cats.

I've been talking about the tuners expected out soon that kill the regen completly. Basically it's gonna fix most peoples complaints but don't expect it to be cheap. It will be required to remove the entire DPF system if the tuner is on. So if you don't have any welding experience expect to fork up about $1000+ for the tuner and exhaust. I wouldn't recommend cutting up the stock exhaust because if something goes wrong with the vehicle they will know if you midified the stock system and will not warranty it. You have a chance it you put the stock system back on in one piece and program the truck back to stock.

my truck has about 3500 miles on it now and it has seemed to get a little better at about 2000 miles now it seems like it is getting worse to tell you the truth...mine is a crew cab, lariat, 4x4, 3.73's, and it won't even break the tires loose...maybe i'm jus spoiled cuz i had a 6.0 with exhaust, tuner, ect. and this one is stock so far...on the regen cycle, are you supposed to let the truck just sit there and idle up until it idles back down and then its done or what?

You don't have to wait. If you shut it down during a regen it will start back up next time the engine is at operating temperature. I'm one of those people who always waits to shut it off after motor and turbos cool off for about 5 minutes. So I normally wait.

I wouldn't expect the tires to break loose just punching the throttle with no boosting first. I will build about 15-20psi of boost first then dump the clutch. If I can get it in 2nd gear those tires really burn, nothin like a dually burnout.
