V-10 Exhaust Options: Gibson, Flowmaster, other?
Nice formula,
I think I'll go with 50f/60r for a while and see what happens.
I'm getting 12mpg city and about 13.8mpg @ 75mph (can't quite break 14mpg) when on the highway. I know I could get better highway mpg if I went a bit slower (say 65mph).
I had the Flowmaster 50 delta series (non-SUV)welded up this past weekend (3 inch center intake, 2.5 inch exit). The muffler shop ran duals exiting by my trailer hitch with 3.5" stainless slash cut tips. Looks great and sounds great. I'll get to see if this makes any difference in conjunction with my K&N in the airbox.
There is a slight resonance in the truck, but only at 1200-1400 rpms. Above or below that it sounds great. I don't spend much time at 1200-1400rpms, except at around 25-40mph in town. I am more than happy with the sound.
I painted the entire muffler and exhaust with 1200 degree flat black paint to protect the aluminized steel from corrosion. That shouldn't be a big problem here in Dallas, as no road salt is used.
Regards,
Karl

Hello all,
This is a great forum as I am new here (Thanks Monsta or whomever left the business card on my truck in Leominster MA)
I had the Gibson Cat-back system installed dual exit rear.. I really like the look but am disappointed with the sound. I don't have much more than stock sound.
I wish I had read here before purchasing the system I may have opted for a muffler replacement only. I may still look into it...
Thanks
Rick

Hey Rick! Yeah, that was me! I think I left it on your truck when you were ar Searstown, right? Not too many V10's will duals around here, so it stuck out. Well...to me anyway.
I've been waiting to see if someone would post here from a card that I left on a truck! I have left so many that my kids now pick out the trucks for me! Glad yer aboard!

I bought the Flowmaster 50 muffler (3" center inlet, dual 2.5" outlets) on sale for $89 from Harry's Hot Rod in Grand Prairie TX.
Mejia Muffler in Grand Prairie (recommended by several friends) welded up the muffler and aluminized dual pipes w/3.5" stainless steel tips running out the rear just outside the hitch for $162.50. I sprayed black heat resistant 1200 F paint inside the muffler prior to installation to protect against corrosion. After installation, I painted the pipes and welds with the same paint.
The paint might be overkill since we don't use road salt in Dallas. I owned several cars when living in Chicago and painted the aluminized aftermarket mufflers/pipes each time. Road salt is used in Chicago, and I never had a bit of rust. I guess I picked that up from my dad who did it each time he had mufflers/pipes installed. Family tradition.

I met a guy at Easyriders in Dallas with a Gibson dual side exit installed on his F-150 and he isn't happy with the sound. He says it doesn't resonate much in the cab, but it doesn't make much sound outside either.
For the record, I don't necessarily equate loud with sounding great. I like some rumble and didn't hear a great deal of it when listening to his pipes. I like the sound of my Flowmaster 50s. After owning it for a few months, I like the slight resonance/sound I hear inside the truck--not much even by my wife's standards. I do like the sound outside. Granted I have a V10, which doesn't sound like a V8, but it has a distinct sound that I like.
Happy 2003

Since,
as my wife would say " I am never happy " I am starting to look into the replacing of the Gibson with a flowmaster 40. It would appear that the muffler length is much different (Gibson being much longer) so I will need to extend the 2 1/2's or the 3... Will let you know what happens...
