Ditto. In my experience rebuilding at home doesn't really last.

Go here;

for the best steering box you will get. I have one in my 76 and just ordered one yesterday for my 79. About $225.00 plus core and shipping. They modify the output shaft so it rides on a bearing to prevent the slop we get in well used boxes. I dont think my 76 steered this good when it was new.

Wink loose gearbox!

who turned the center screw all the way out? Man you must have 3/4 turn in the wheel before you catch the gear! OK this is what you do set the wheels streight ahead,back off the lock nut and turn the screw in till it begins to get tight,now back it up just a 1/8th turn.BE SURE YOUR WHEELS ARE STREIGHT AHEAD. If not you will have a bind in the box as you try to go past center, If this is still to loose try 1/8th turns clockwise and watch for center binding. this will tighten up that afull no gearbox feeling. now if you still are having trouble replace the box.JNT. ps after I reread the post I realized your adjustment screw was not even close to correct.

With that adjustment screw turned all the way out the box is already screwed.

Too many people get real handy turning those adjustment screws and all they do is damage

Yes the box has been compromised,but try to reset the adjustment,it may save your box but I must agree with the former post.This is the type of adjustment ment for those who do know the system. Please be very carfull and use good judgement when testing( dont get out on the freeway.JNT
