Dead spot in V10 acceleration
Thought I'd see if anyone has any suggestions on this one. When I really get on the gas it will accelerate hard in first to about 5000rpm, then shift. After the shift there is what I call a "dead" spot where the engine isn't revving hard anymore then it kicks back in and pulls hard to the next shift. After the shift into 3rd it seems to be making steady power, maybe a tiny lag but not near the lag after the 1-2 shift.
Anyone have any ideas of what is causing this?? Does this happen to anyone else's V10? Could this be the power delay that Banks references?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 06-Jan-03 AT 08:09 PM (EST)]What you have described pretty much describes how my 02,V-10 ran stock.
It would kinda run out of wind towards redline.I suspect that the camshaft profile has a lot to do with this along with the stock exhaust.
After I shifted to the next gear,(manual trans),acceleration would feel "soft" until it picked up some rpms after the shift.
I do know that the V-10 does not go back into what's known as open loop at wide open throttle like the 5.4 does and in turn is leaner at than the V-8 at 90% or better throttle openings.
My cure was the Banks Power Pack and a Diablo Delta chip. The second program that I have on my chip is 93 octane and throws the system back into open loop near full throttle aceleration.
My guess is that a Diablo chip with the open loop upgrade will address these issues.
My .02
Just thought of something else.
Does Ford kill the or curtail the ignition on auto equipped trucks when they shift?
If so,could this be some of what you are experiencing.

Thanks 4x4x4x4 for the info on your motor. Now that I think about it, the V10 does seem to run out of wind between 4200 and 5000 rpms. Makes alot of noise but just doesn't feel like it is making alot of power. I had my eye on the Banks powerpack already and this really makes me want it as it seems to have alleviated this problem on your V10.
As far as the lag on the shift goes, I do suspect there is some sort of program that is limiting power through the auto tranny between shifts. Another mod I want after the Banks is the SCMT. I bet the lag dissapears with a more agressive computer setting.
I just wanted to see if anyone else had experienced this as I was thinking something was up in the fuel or ignition somewhere. Now it sounds like it is just restricted by the factory intake/exhaust and chip. I can fix that!

My '01 V10 pulls great up until it shifts, at around 4800 RPM. I believe this is where the peak horsepower is anyway, so no need to go past that. It's an auto.
Torque is steady all the way up to 4800/4900 when the auto shifts.
