4.6L BIGTIME PROBLEM !!!!

My mother recently overheated her 4.6L V8 OHC in her 1996 Mercury Cougar XR7 (ya i know its a car but same engine)

She was going down the highway and the engine made some banging/clanking noises so she pulled off the highway The motor was seized till it cooled down then started my father started the car at the dealer it was towed to and then added oil and anifreez to the engine then drove to our place of work it ran rough ( we figure foweled plugs) and steamed "alot", when we got the car back to where i work we looked it over and noticed the rear of the engine covered in oil (fresh) but could not determine where it was coming from but was not coming from heads, and the engine uses antifreez now we have to keep adding more after every time its drove, oil is not in oil as of yet and roughly 200 klm have been put on engine since this incedent (still steams) Ford says there havent been any problems with this engine doing this and have no idea why it would have,

any one had any probs like this ? rebuilding this engine is an option we figure and is way better then $5000 from Ford for a crate engine
anyone ever rebuilt a 4.6L ?

Just wondering lookin for info, oh theres 85,000 klm's on this motor....

Thanx

4.6L BIGTIME PROBLEM !!!!

LAST EDITED ON 26-Mar-01 AT 02:37 PM (EST)[p]If you heard bang & clang noises someting broke and caused the noise. When you open it up make sure you check the heads for warping. Check out http://www.fordpartsonline.com/ they have very competetive prices.

4.6L BIGTIME PROBLEM !!!!

The intakes are known for craking on this motor. Ford knows about it and will cover the cost for a new intake and tow. Do not drive it as you will seize it. Go to www.tccoa.com. This is the 89-97 thunderbird and cougar club of america. Get on the BBS and do a search. The problem you have will be everywhere. Post a question and them guys will tell you the details. They know exactly what you need to do.

4.6L BIGTIME PROBLEM !!!!

When engines consume coolant and there is no leak in the external cooling i.e. hoses and radiator, it usually the head gaskets. It could be the intake but that will not cause your oil problem. The head gaskets probably got burned during the overheat so coolant is leaking past into the cylinder and coming out the exhaust. Do you get clouds of white smoke out the exhaust? if so they that's where the problem is. The clouds won't be continuous. Once in a while you will get a cloud of white smoke for 5 to 30 seconds and then it stops.

4.6L BIGTIME PROBLEM !!!!

IF you are burning coolant after an overheat usually with aluminum head engines the heads are warped. If you are LUCKY it's just a head gasket.

4.6L BIGTIME PROBLEM !!!!

Thanx to all that reply'ed we had the car fixed at our local Ford Dealer they estamated the cost to be around $1000 (canadian) to repair it, when they removed the heads one was warped so they had to replace it turns out they quoted us to much it only cost $700 to fix the problem and do a tune up while it was in the shop, they said it was a part that malfunctioned so it was Fords problem that the car over heated.
