4.6L Interchangability
Is there much difference in the 4.6L from 1992 to 2002?
I know that some of the performance engines came with dual overhead cams, but how universal are the engines?
I would like to retire my 1992 engine and get a later model but I can not find anyone who can tell me what years can interchange.
Thanks in advance
Jerry T

You'll want a 99 or newer engine out of a Mustang GT, or a 01 or newer engine from a Crown Vic. Those have the "performance improved" heads that can easily give you a 20 hp jump because they flow better. They should be completely interchangible with any other SOHC 4.6 engine, but have more power. But really, do you have a specific problem with your engine that you want to replace it? 4.6's are very durable engines, and even with 200,000 on them, if you take care of the engine, it should run fine.

Thanks for the reply.
Actually my 92 has about 240K on it and it's starting to use about a quart of oil every 1000 miles or so.
I'm a little concerned about reliability so I am considering a rebuild or replacement.
I guess if I use a replacement from a newer vehicle, then I would need to use all of the engine management stuff from my old engine.
Thanks
