Homemade Cold Air Intake

I was talking to a guy with a 99 last night that cut the air dam next to the grill out and this allowed clean air from the front of the truck to be force fed from outside to inside the air cleaner. He did cover the end with window screen to limit the amount of bugs getting in.
Has anyone tried it? Did it work? Is that plastic important? Any suggestions if I were to do this? How do you get those plastic clips that hold the rubber air dam thing out w/o breaking them!?!
Thank in advance
Scott

Yep that's what we call a ZooDad. Don't know exactly why we call it that, but we do.
Yes it is an important piece of plastic. Heck if it wasn't there, we couldn't do the zoodad. It has to work. Don't know what you are talking about clips. I didn't use screen. I mean what's a few more bugs anyway.

Zoodad!?!? I guess I now know what that means! I see you have a 6637 filter in there? That is a NAPA number? Mine is a 6728 NAPA Gold. Why is that better?

When I say clips I am not really talking clips. They are round push pins that hold the rubber in.

This is a 6637, Don't know what a 6728 is.

Thanks to Kwikkordead for the picture. I got one of mine somewhere, but it seems to be hiding.

I used a metal screen to cover the tube. It does restrict the airflow a bit, but it stops most rain and snow from entering also. It is definitely worth doing, screen or no screen as it allows more cool air to get to the engine.

Well, thanks. I had wondered, but was not about to ask as it seemed like everyone else already knew.
