351W with 302 flywheel

I am trying to put a 351W in my boat that had a 302. The only bell I have is the one off the 302 and it wont fit over the ring gear or index the starter. I have no machine shop closer tha a 1000 miles in Seattle. How bad would it be to put the smaller 302 flywheel on the 351 to get every thing to bolt up? Or can I buy a smaller 302 size flywheel balanced for the 351W?

This is urgent guys. Please help fast. I got to have it running in a week.

It's the original marien flywheel that was with the boat in 78 to the best of my knowledge. How do I tell if it's 28 oz?

if its a 1978 302 then youre good... all of the 351w and the 302 before 1983 were 28 oz imbalance... so go ahead and use the 1978 flywheel on the 351w

Thanks guys ya saved my Dog House. I'll pull it off the 302 block in the AM and get back to ya when I find some numbers. The only other chaise I have if I can't make this work is to put in an SBC. I even got a blazzer with the small deisle. But man I love this 351w. Being Marine it is just right for mid rang toque. I got a cast 69 intake I need my brotker to send me. It's polisheed so all I have to do is gasket port it and decide on a small to meadium carb for It and I think she will be sweet. See ya in the AM with the numbers.
Thanks Arctic

if youre looking for a carb, id go edelbrock 600 cfm for fuel economy, or holley 600cfm for power. jmo
holley will do slightly better on power... they almost always do, but with gas over 3 a gallon the edelbrock will almost always win with mileage

I don't really need the power per say. The 2V worked well on the 302 for getting the Boat up on step. But ya had to run near WOT to cruse at 28 mules an hour. I am hoping for the 351W to do it with less throttle And better mileage. And I think a 600 Edelbrock will do that better than the 2v. Run her up on step then back her down till she is only running on the Primary. What do ya think? Am I asking to much?

Morning guys. Thanks for the help. It's just getting light and I got my Meds and some coffee in me so shortly I'll go out and pull a couple flywheels looking for a number 78 to say it is 28 oz. Remember that the 351W is a new long block. Crate motor if ya will. So let me know if it may be different as numbers on it would only tell what it was and not what it is. And no re builders tag. But it is a Marine engine. Which to me means that it is built for extended mid to high end operation. Correct? I don't suppose I can get the numbers of the heads without pulling the intake. Correct? I think I read that on here somewhere. Damn I an excited to get her fired off. But as lone as she has sat it prolly has a couple stuck lifters again and will most likely bend a push rod or two. Thats how it was when I cot it with around 10 hours on it. Should I pull the covers and give the rockers a little tap or something first. Any Ideas to in sher That the lifters aren't stuck before starting short of pulling the intake?

Ok Hemieater here are the numbers off the 302 flywheel from the engine I pull from the Dog House. C,G or o 77E-E
number cast and raised: C6ZE6380A.
Please anybody get back to me ASAP as to weather this is a 28 oz flywheel. I am at a stand still till I know if this will work on the 351W.

Thank you Desperate Arctic

well it might be a 66 flywheel with the C6 number there. I don't know....

look on the 302 flywheel for a counter weight of some kind......if it has no weight made into it, it might be a 0 balance...but I doubt it, it should be 28OZ if it's a 78 302.

yep its a 28oz imbalance flywheel designed in 1966, but made in 1977... the casting number is just a revision number- the last time there was a change made to the casting
