I have heard of everyone running bio,wvo,trans fluid and others. What about hydraulic fluid? Would this be a viable option?

 

You mean aircraft hydraulics, tractor hydraulics, or what? Hydrualic fluids are not created equal. Synthetic hydraulic fluid typically found in the aircraft industry is fire resistant, so it probably wouldn't make a very good fuel.

 

Also what vehicle are we talking??

 

More on the order of the stuff for tractors. The factory in town has molding machines. I do not think it is a synthetic, but will check.

I run used ATF and hydraulic oil, ISO 32 and 46 regularily. I have probably 30,000 mile on the stuff. I service air compressors for a living and collect large amounts of these oils. The only modification I've done is to install a filter prior to the fuel pump . I also use only my front tank for hydraulic oil..

I have no drivability issues, smoke or other difficulties. I also have 190,000 miles on the odo.

 

Just wondering, have you ever been stopped by the DOT for a fuel check? ATF is red as is off road diesel, I'll bet you would have to do a LOT of fast talking to keep from getting a ticket for illegal fuel with red ATF tinted fuel.

 

Never been checked but I only occasionally run ATF. Usually I run Hydraulic and even sometimes I run synthetic hydraulic oil.

 

If DOT did a fuel check you could still be trouble because you haven't bled any tax money for the fuel you are using on their magnificent road system.
Sorry, just hate taxes...

 

I've been thinking of finding one of the old military multifuel engines (like the 3 cyl. Detroits used in the old Gama Goats) and putting it in a small truck chassis. Those things were designed to burn anything flammable, as long as it had some lubrication quality. Engine oil, gas (with some oil added), fryer oil, hydraulic oil, brake fluid, didn't matter. It'd burn it.

 

Good idea Red. I've been tinkering with the idea of tying one of those to a generator myself.
