Turbo 4.9L

I answered a postings in another heading concerning turbo charging a 4.9L. I thought that others may be interested in my experience, so have reposted the item here:

I am currently in the process of having a turbo put on my '92 4.9L Bronco w/ 5sp. The shop doing the work has had to piece together the parts (in process). The shop gave me the choice between two turbos, one larger than the other. I elected to go with the smaller of the two. The smaller turbo has quicker throttle response, the larger provides power further up the RPM scale than the smaller. The 4.9L is not a high revving engine, therefor, the increased power through the higher revs is not as important. And I like the idea of quicker throttle response. So, we have decided to go with the smaller turbo.

Before deciding on the turbo, my mechanic suggested working the head, changing the cam, and adding headers. He said that this will allow the engine to rev much higher with more HP. However, he indicated that torque will not change significantly. Since HP is simply a mathematical computation involving torque and RPM, increased HP without increased torque means that the power comes on at higher RPM's. I don't want to change my power curve, I want increased power throughout my current power curve. My mechanic has been working with turbos for 20 years. He tells me that the turbo will increase torque throughout the power curve. Increased torque at any RPM results in increased HP. My mechanic tells me that 12 lbs of boost will double the current torque. Most OEM cars from the factory have 4-5 lbs of boost. We are going with 7-8 lbs.

All of this for less than $2,000, installed. I have investigated superchargers (not available), and engine swaps (expensive and smog problems here in California). My mechanic was recommended by Clifford Performance.

The work should be done in the next 10 - 14 days. Check back with me and I'll tell you how it turns out.
