Shell To Launch 5W-40 / CJ4 Spec'd Oil In September or October 2007
Emailed Shell as to an update on upgrading their current 5W-40 synthetic motor oil to the new CJ4 oil spec? I personally use Rotella-Syn due to availability and price and have always liked the easier cold starting benefits and better high heat protection... but everything I have read is that the CJ4 oil spec offers better viscosity protection and less wear than CI4 (one spec compared to the other).
Here is the email reply I received from Shell this AM...
Jeff, we plan on introducing Rotella T Synthetic 5W-40 CJ-4 around September/October of this year. Thank you for your interest in Shell products.

Guess this makes sense as it will become available prior to the start of the cold winter season? I have always wondered what kind of oil users of the new 6.4L motor would use if they needed, or wanted, a 5W-40 oil like many of 6.0L owners use?
I will be the first to change over from my current CI4+ to the CJ4 when available.
After running hot shots secret for 4k Im now running the rotella syn 5w-40, and plan to keep running it. Like Beach has said this synthetic seems to be the best for these motors and injectors.
Great news Beach. I've been wondering when the new CJ-4 spec would be available in Rotella's 5W-40. I'll be needing an oil change in late September. Hope it's on the shelf by then.

Hey now... point of clarification.....
I never stated it was best... ever....
I just have stated it is what I use due to availability and price.
Mobil, Shaffers, Chevron and a few others all make quality oils and I am sure that their 5W-40 versions are just as good???
For me... Rotella-Syn works... that's all I have ever stated and my oil analysis reports state the same.
At what mileage is it considered safe to switch over to synthetic? I have about 9000 on my rig.
No one can say or knows....
Some state (as many oil manufactures) that you can switch right away.
Others state to wait for one or two oil changes....
Others state to wait until 10,000 miles to ensure seating of the rings and such...
Diesels take longer to break-in and unless one needs synthetic for cold weather benefits, I tend to go with the 10,000 mile therory... but nowhere is this written.
As long as you use a Racor made filter (Framm, Motorcraft or Racor)... all made by Racor and an oil that is either CI4+ or CJ4 spec'd (CJ4 is newest spec, but no synthetics as of yet - except Amsoil... but I do not recommend it due to no API certs)... you will be fine... and change your oil and filter every 5,000 miles even if using synthetic oil.
I would assume your good to change at 9,000 miles if your due for a change.
I just read an interesting article regarding the new CJ-4 vs. CI-4+ Oil specifications. Now I'm not trying to start an oil debate, and the article comes from a site viewed by some as rivals, but I reckon since we all share an affection for our trucks, this might prove interesting reading. Great link....
Wow... I am glad that my choice of Rotella-Syn 5W-40 (CI4+) is rated as the #2 oil tested!!!!!
Wow, I used due to availability and cost... and darn glad I am!!!!
Surprised at some of the other "name brands" that did not test as well.... and always knew that the "racing" and MLM brands of oil were just hype and overpriced.
Great impartial oil analysis story... and yes, I do not do extended oil drains as I agree with their story... clean fresh oil and staying within the manufacture's service intervals is easier, less expensive and safer!!!
Having read this, I'm fairly curious now as to what they'd say to a Detroit Series 60 owner who essentially has access only to the "wouldn't cross the street for... " oils.... ??? I may have to start doing a little bit closer inspection on oils when I do my oil changes from now on....
On edit.... a little digging on the TDR website shows that CI4+ availability is remarkably limited... Might not have much of a choice any more. Thanks yet again to the EPA....

Where is the data in that link from the testing. thats just a bunch of virgin oil analysis' and a guy rating them by what he thinks what add pack will perform the best. The CJ4s may have a ho-hum add pack in his opinion, but thier is a reason they cost more, they use better base stocks and in general more expensive add packs.
That's all they wanted him to do, was rate based on virgin analysis. Base stock will work for pure lubrication, but when you have to consider the other jobs the oil has to do, analysis of the additive package comes in to play. And I suspect the increased price of the CJ4's has to do more with the price of the base crude and market availability than the quality (or lack thereof) of the finished product.
Keep in mind that CJ4 was intended to be used with the new ULSD fuel. Therefore, the additive package will be different as it was designed to be used with a fuel having a different chemical composition. The TBN is lower by design as the sulfur content in ULSD is significantly lower than LSD, thereby less need for neutralizing margin in the oil. That's why diesel engine manufacturers recommend cutting the oil change interval in half if you use CJ4 spec oil with LSD fuel.

Hey, that's a great link! I've been thinking of switching over to Rotella-Syn 5W-40 before the winter, and now I'm sure. Once I've switched over I'll be staying with it. Thanks for the info.
