Bad Fuel pump and wierd noise underhood?
The other day my truck sputtered and shuddered while trying to accelerate onto the interstate and eventually died completely while trying to make it to the next exit. The truck will start but runs extremely rough. After reading a few of the post under the thread "ford on road dead" it sounded like my problem was possibly my fuel pump. So I checked the fuel pump by see if it turned on when the key was turned on and it seemed like it did but it sounded somewhat weak. So I checked it with the voltmeter and when the key is turned on it reads 10.5 volts at the fuel pump. Batteries read 12.5v. Then I drained the fuel out of the fuel filter/water seperator and then turned the key to see if it refilled, It did not. While turning the key on and off doing these test I noticed a noise coming from somewhere underneath the driver side battery about 5 or 6 seconds after the key was turned, sounded like a fast click, click, click
So my questions are:
1) what should the voltage readings be at the fuel pump with key on?
2) should the fuel filter/water seperator be refilling with fuel by just turning key to on position.
3) does anyone have any ideas what the strange noise could be?
Thanks for any help.

Can't help you with 1 & 3, but the fuel bowl should refill by cycling the key on and off. Assuming you leave the key on for about 20 seconds, or until you hear the fuel pump shut off.
I'm "ford on road dead" and my pump either worked or didn't. The truck either ran or it didn't. No rough running or anything like that. If it will start and stay running it may not be the fuel pump. If it felt more like a backfire without the sound or a cough I would guess the CPS sensor. Did your ses light come on and stay on?
The fuel pump is about as easy to change as the fuel filter on my wifes 04 150, and they even look the same except for the wires.
If it's running rough I'd look at the fuel filter or cps first. Both of those are cheaper than the $200 fuel pump. Good Luck.

Thanks for the input f350-6, ,my first thought was the CPS but I didnt get any ses light....But a have a cps on order so I will try that for sure when it comes in. I will replace the fuel filter as well since I just got the truck about 2 months ago and dont know when the last time it was changed...if ever....but it looked ok. It will start but Im not sure that it will stay running I havent let it run for more than a few seconds since it died because it sounds so awful.

Well I just replaced the fuel pump this afternoon and it seems to be running normal. Got the new pump from autozone for $150, seemed to be a little bit different size(shorter) than the stock pump so the fuel line running to the engine was barely long enough to connect, so hopefully this wont cause an issue.

Well hopefully this fixes it and you have better luck than I did. My pump from NAPA was $60 more, but when your on foot you go with local availability. My pump was a little shorter too but the hose on the rear was long enough that it wasn't an issue. I'm still surprised those little snap on fittings don't leak, but if you got it all snapped into place with no leaks I wouldn't worry too much. My back hose seemed so loose I was sure it would leak, but I never saw a drop.
