my new to me 46 tonner

I just drove home with a new to me 46 tonner. It is a lot easier to get forgiveness from my wife than permission. So that being said for the first few miles of driving all was fine. then it started to overheat so I pulled over and let it cool down added water and coolant drove a little while did it again. Now I'm home and trying to figure out the problem motor has no water in the oil I will have to pick up a service manual but for now any ideas would be fine. the water pumps turn and not loose. belts are good will post a picture as soon as I figure out how to

Glenn, welcome to FTE. A truck you can drive home is always a huge plus. Great to see another Tonner still out there and running.
Start off by giving her a good flushing, who knows what kind of garbage has collected in there in 61 years.

planned to flush it out. It boiled out about 5 gals of water to drive home but I never let the gage go all the way up. Going to look for thermostats tomorrow if it even has any and try and find out what pressure cap should be on it.

The thermostats will be at the ends of the upper radiator hoses, right on the cylinder heads, 1 for each head. The cap was usually around a 4 lb cap, anything more is too high a pressure for these old systems.

thanks for the info. I think I've read just about every post. I hope to be able to answer questions after I dive head first into the 46. I took it to the hand car wash and used soft scrub on the white paint. It came out pretty good I'll try and post some pictures tomorrow when I get to work.
