I have seen alot of post on MPG for the new 6.4 PSD and alot of dissapointed people. I am curious why people would think that there would be no loss of MPG with the increase of power and performance. Just curious on your thoughts.
I think these are pertty close to actual numbers
7.3 PSD 275 HP and 520 Torque manual version
6.0 PSD 325 HP and 570 Torque
6.4 PSD 350 HP and 650 Torque

I would think both contribute, more torque and hp takes extra fuel too. But the interesting comparison, my 95 Firehawk has 315 hp runs the quarter in 13.5 sec. and still gets 18mpg but a late 60's Firebird that runs the quarter in 13.5 probably only got 10 to 12mpg. So Technology and computers on one hand can help. The 6.4 is a whole different set of restrictions. But it can really tow with that 650# of Torque

I agree, the 6.4 PSD does have MPG robbing emission equpiment on it. The regen cycle uses extra fuel and timming to increase EGT'S to clean the DPF, so thats a given fuel loss. But how much does this truly affect overall MPG.
I personaly think the DPF is restrictive but i have seen post that removing the DPF only gained 1 HP. In addition, people who have removed the CAT and DPF have seen little gain in performance and MPG which leads me to believe that this epupiment is not the sole los of MPG in the 6.4 PSD
This process only happens once or twice per tank of fuel depending on driving habits and driving conditions.

I have not driven a 6.4 yet, but from what I hear, this engine is smoooooth. I wonder if guys tend to accellerate faster with the 6.4 than the old trucks due to the smooth quiet engine. I have heard guys say they have to use the cruise control more because you don't realize your doing 80 on the expressway.

You are right, They also quieted the cab also for road and wind noise. Pulling our Fiver had to be careful, it kept creeping above the well above speed limit especially on smooth quiet roads. On most roads I was able to travel 5+ mph above the limit. On the hills through the Poconos I could keep it at any speed I wanted. It worked but had no problem with the hills. In 5'th gear it is really quiet towing

I think the mileage could be a little better, but i think the power and performance far surpasses the older PDS. Hopefully the reliabilty will be as good as the old 7.3 PSD.

Yes emissions is some of the mileage issues but isnt the power band higher up in the RPM range 6.4's vs 7.3's? More RPM more engine cycles = more fuel.
This issue can definately be answered by looking at powerstroked162s or as we know him (cowboy steve) post. An F450 getting 18 mpg. I am definately gonna blame the dpf for the low mpg people are seeing with the 6.4L.
I just got a 6.4 about two weeks ago. It just turned 1,000 miles yesterday. It has an enclosed service bed on a 4 dr duelly. Averaging about 9 mpg compared to a 6.0 that was averaging 12 with the same service bed. The only difference is this one is 4 wd. I would not think that would affect the millage. Same gear ratio. I hope there is some way to get the millage up or I am stuck with an expensive Diesel that gets the millage of a Gas.
This is the first Ford diesel that has ever disapointed me and I have owned them since the old 6.9.

What kind of service body do you have? I have been looking at the Knaphiede KUV to put on one of these beasts. Post some pics. Four wheel drive adds wieght, and the 08s are heavier to begin with. Also, a 4x4 truck will sit a little higher making it even less aerodynamic. Most guys are reporting thier mileage comes up after you get more miles put on it.
Well I hope the MPG goes up, but I doubt it is ever going to match the 6.0. I caught my first regen today, and grabbed my infrared heat gun. Exhaust notched 380 F, talk about hot.
I have a Heat and Air business, and found the enclosed service bed it what I need. Reading offered the widest space without fender wells inside.
Keyless entry was a smart move too. I can work in an apartment complex, and lock all door with one button. This bed has been on three trucks.
Regens kill fuel mileage as well as lower rear end gear ratios. I was able to get 18 mpg highway, empty, driven under 60mph. Anything is possible its just how far are you willing to go. Break in periods also can influence poor fuel mileage so understand that fuel mileage numbers will pick up as you get some numbers on these trucks. Remember when the 6.blows first cam out and the terrible mileage all those owners got right outta the gates.
