More boost at lower RPM, hybrid turbo?
I am wondering if its possible to modify an older ATS 088 setup (T4 Turbo?) to give more boost at lower RPMs. I have heard a little about hybrid turbochargers, where in my case, I could put a larger compressor in to get more boost, anyone else heard of this or tried it?
Apearently the T3/T4 hybrid is very popular for small gassers, but I have been told that the turbos used on these kits were the T4, can anyone confirm this?
The reason I want some more boost at lower RPM is how I have geared my truck, at 70 mph, it is only turning around 1600 RPM. At those speeds, I can only get around 2-3 psi before smoke starts, and EGTs begin to climb.
I know that a larger compressor will mean more turbo lag, but I'm not really worried about that, I'm just trying to take advantage of the low revs that a 3.08/E4OD combo gives me.
Any ideas apresiated.

The little gasser hybrid turbos are actually 2 halves, a T3 turbine side and a T4 compressor side bolted together with a better bearing (360' Thrust Bearings) it allows them to spool up faster due to the small turbine side but still keep the bigger boost pressures. It sounds like it is exactly what you are looking for but I don't know any specifics about a Diesel application.
I found a good description from this Turbo company in the UK;

I understand how the T3-T4 hybrid is put together, I'm just not quite sure 1) If the older ATS uses a T3 or T4, and 2) if it is a T4, what my options are for swapping a housing from a larger turbo.
