How safe are the pre filter bags?
I took the airaid intake with the pre-filter off of my 06 about 2k miles ago b/c of the fact that i was traveling away from the local dealer who was fine with the intake. I do believe the stock unit is the best for filtration, but how much better does the pre-filter bags help the filtration process? The reason i am asking is because i am seeing an average of a 2mpg decrease with the stock filter back on.

I run an AiRaid on my 05, and for 6 months I had a pre-filter on it. Really the only thing it does is keep the heavy stuff off of the filter. I clean my filter at every oil change and have yet to see anything in the intake tube after it. I have not put the pre-filter on since the last time I cleaned it, but I noticed the other day I had the build up of crap in the pleats again. I am due for an oil change, so the pre-filter will be going back on.

p.s. I believe the pre filter only makes cleaning time faster and easier. AEM supposedly has a replacement filter for our intakes. I will research it tomorrow. I may switch to there non oil filter element. That with the pre-filter should make filter service a snap, which means I will likely do it more often.

Ya thats the filter I'm talking about. Its about 50 bucks. I dont have the part number on our site. Its just another one of those things I keep forgetting about. As for filtration qualities we sell tons of AEM systems and they appear to do a great job. Of course it will only be as good as you make it with regular cleaning.

The best thing I have found about the pre filter is it keeps the bugs and real big stuff out of the pleats. When those things get into the filter it is really hard to get them out without damaging the filter. With the pre filter bag it isn't a problem.
The AEM dryflow filter sounds a lot like the AFE Proguard 7 filter. I am interested in one that will work with the Airaid intake as I have that on my truck right now. I haven't had any issues with it, but not having to mess with oiling the filter sounds good. I emailed AFE a while ago looking for a filter to replace my Airraid one, but they never got back to me. If someone could post the part number for either of them I would appreciate it.
