engine paint question

hey guys, i am in the process(long, slow and expensive fo a college students budget) and i painted the block awhile ago using ford dark blue engine paint, but then i read somewhere about painting the engine inside and out, and i was wondering what parts of the inside of the engine they meant, or if any should indeed be painted. i masked off the lifter valley, deck of the bloce, everything that wasnt external. any info would be appreciated. thanks,
mike

engine paint question

some guys paint the inside of the block to help the oil flow back more easily, by giving a smoother surface. the ones i have seen are basically what you can see when you have oil pan off.

engine paint question

I have heard of blocks being painted on the inside. I do know that it was done with something simmular to what is used on electrical (industrial) motors. Red in color.
I would be afraid that it would `flake off` if not done 100% correct. I would also think that `de flashing the oil return holes would help more than the paint.

If you are going to paint the inside of your engine use Glyptal. It was developed for use on electric motors and is really tough. You can get is in both spray can and brush on. I would recommend brushing it on, on all none machined surfaces and doing 2 coats. On my last project I did this and have a very smooth finish. As for how long it last I tell you soon as I'm about to tear the motor down again. It looks real nice when its done.

engine paint question

I was wondering. Can you powdercoat an engine block, or would it get to hot for this process?

i think that it would be difficult if not impossible to isolate the powdercoating material to only stick to certain parts of the block.you would have to really seal off the areas well that you don't want to cover, and then it would probably be hard to remove the material you use for sealing when the powdercoat hardens. not to mention would seal material stand up to heat of process.

I wouldn't paint the engine inside. I bought a quart of the glyptal to put on an engine I was working on at the time. I didn't use it. A few months later 2 different people I know lost engines because of glyptal paint separating from the block and sealing the oil pickup screen.
If I can find the paint - I'll give you a good price on it.

Don't paint the inside of your block. What ever minimal gains you might get are far out wieghed by the negatives. The block has to be absolutely spotlessly clean or the paint will end up in your oil. Paint the outside with high temp paint from AutoZone or the like and be done with it. Save your energy for something with more return for your work and effort.
