it is in fact a ham (VHF) radio...and the antenna is there until i get the courage up to drill a hole in my roof...its the ICOM V800...and its awesome.
quite possibly the best $200 safety investment ive ever made!!

im not sure of the brand - but its a DUAL BAND antenna.
with line of sight...i can reach out to people about 30 miles away. not too shabby. i plan to add a CB too...not everyone is on either platform - so having both seems best. (plus - a good CB is also about $200 - a fair price i think)
