Unless you already have the materials on hand that would be otherwise unused, building your own stand would be a waste of money and time. Most engine parts suppliers, (PAW, JEGS, etc) already sell heavy duty stands at reasonable prices that can be broken down for storage. If you build one yourself, chances are it would be welded solid and taking up space on your floor all the time. Unless you plan to rebuild engines all of the time, I wouldn't bother building one.

I've got a book called"The Racer's Guide to Fabricating Shop Equipment" and it has a plan for an engine stand fabbed from 2x2 tubing, 1/4" plate for the head and 3 and 3.5" pipe for the pivot for the head plate.. I'll be glad to scan it in and email to you or xerox and mail.. don't know what your building..but this would probably handle a big block.. I've got my 460 hanging on one very similar and while it is a little difficult to turn.. it handles the weight.. you can see most of mine on my home page... http://jniolon.clubfte.com look in the text portion on the right side and click on the link for "Ford 460 engine" under the picture of my truck.

I've built one in the past from 4" thick wall conduit and 1/2" plate for the head.. it was seriously heavy duty and it was a direct copy of one used for holding Catepiller deisel engines for building..

drop me an email with a land address or let me know if you want email copy.. john
