VIN help - Oddball for sale add - Crew Cab
OK all - I have found a 1974 crew cab that the guy claims is a long bed 4wd. As many of us have heard Mi1lion and NumberDummy say - Ford didn't make um. I am interested in buying this truck so I requested a VIN number to see what it really is - since I won't have time to make the drive to see it for another 1/2 a week or so.
VIN the owner gave me is: F28YCU24691.
When putting that into Mi1lion's VIN calculator I get a 4wd frame 1974 F-250 crew cab built at the Ontario plant.
Can anyone tell me any more about the truck from that?
I was thinking it was a longbed 2wd that was converted to 4wd, but after seeing the VIN I'm not sure.
The pics of the truck sure look like a long bed and the guy swears it's an 8' bed. I had him give me an overall measurement from the back of tail lights to the front of the grill and he said 240" (20'-0"). I just measured my short bed crew and it is 225" (18'-9"). Maybe they swaped a longbed on it?????
Any help is apprecited - thanks.
Oh yeah - sorry for not posting the link, but I didn't just in case someone else on here is semi local and lookngi for a longbed 4wd CC

Did you get a clear pic of the VIN? Thats not a normal VIN. The F28 part doesnt make sense. Does he know any history about the truck like the original owner? Maybe it was some sorta special service truck. Where is it located...ie logging country or some sorta rail road truck, military? Maybe its a 2 ton chassis cab truck that someone added an 8' bed to.

No pic of the VIN - I guess I could ask.
I did ask if the VIN on the door matched the frame and title as well. He said the title matched door, but didn't mention the frame. I will check this weekend when I look at it.
The truck is ALL green - inside and out and supposedly has a dump bed on it. I was thinking it might be a forestry truck, but who knows.
Oh yeah - the VIN says it has a 360, but the owner said 351m. I guess that's a common PO swap thing though...

Yeah a dump truck type bed. Well a stock bed set up to dump. I've asked for ppics of this setup and haven't gotten any. I'll take some when I look at it though. Also - I'll try and put some overall pics up tomorrow - since I'm not at my computer right now. The overall pics of the truck don't show much as they are pretty small and taken from far away, but you'll get the idea.

Series: F28 = F250 4x4 Cab and Chassis
(A Cab & Chassis has no back of cab equipment...nothing there but bare frame rails, spare tire, gas tank(s), wiring and lamps)
Engine: Y = 360 2V
Assembly Plant: C = Ontario, Canada Truck Assembly Plant
Numerical Sequence of Assembly: U24691 = 1974
Series decode = Source: 1973/79 Ford Light Truck Parts Catalog ~ General Information Section ~ Series Codes ~ Page 20
What engine?
Ppl not involved in the old car/truck hobby are usually clueless.
360 = 5 valve cover bolts / 351M = 8 valve cover bolts
When you go to look at it , get the DSO code from the VIN plate. That will tell if it was a US Government (Forestry Service, National Parks Service, etc) purchase or not.
Note: 2 digit DSO = normal production / 6 digit DSO = special order.

Thanks for the help guys. A question on the cab and chassis thing NumberDummy - would the chassis (frame/wheelbase) be set up as a short bed length or a long bed length? Or does that depend on the DSO code?
I will let you all know what I see this weekend. Wether I decide to buy it or not I WILL be taking a lot of picutres

Guy had it listed for $4k a week ago and is now $3k. He said in the add he is moving nad HAS to sell this week. I will test that when I go to look at it and offer him $2k.
I'm not a huge fan of the green, so many of you that have been looking for good quality green door panels etc. may be in luck soon!
Thanks for the heads up on the wheelbase. I am gonig to check that, but the thing looks longer between the back of the cab and rear wheel than my short bed crew is.

1. It now has a pickup bed, but it was shipped as a Cab & Chassis (F28), so that bed was added later by a PO. The bed is not correct for a F250 Crew Cab...see below. 1974 F250 CC's as original had a 155" wheelbase, the F350 CC's had a 166.5" wheelbase, and that's what this appears to be.
2. If the wheelbase on this F250 is 166.5" the truck was a special order. The actual wheelbase is listed on the VIN plate.
>>> 3. As original, 1973/79 F250 Crew Cabs came only with short beds. 1973/79 F350 Crew Cabs came with long beds. <<<
4. The paint color is not consistant with the Forestry Service, but is closer to what the National Park Service used. Since the bed was added, it may not be the original color.
Look on the VIN plate for PAINT (Look above the line for the paint code, not below the line). Several greens were used originally. If this was a Gov't purchased vehicle, there may not be a paint code, but the letters: SS = Ford's code for a special color.
1974 GREEN paint colors and door codes: O = Dark GREEN / P = Medium GREEN / U = Medium Lime GREEN Metallic.

thanks for the info.
I have heard the deal about F-250 CCs vs. F-350 CCs and 4x4 CCs before, and that is why I started this post. I was hoping more could be determind from the VIN alone - but it looks like I will need a bunch more info off the VIN plate on the door.
I understand the bed had to have been added, I just can't really tell from the pics if it fits right/well though. I will check the VIN for the wheel base to check this and I'll also take a look at the paint code.
I hope to look at the truck this Sunday - so hopefully I'll have more answers then.
