Big increase in 2005 F350 towing capacity- why?

I'm searching for a used dually that will tow 15,200#.. was surprised to find F350s prior to 2005 have max towing capacities of 13,300 or less, so they won't do it.

In particular, according to Ford's towing guides:

2004 F350 Dually 6.0L V8 TD 4.10 axle will tow 12,800 pounds..
2005 F350 Dually 6.0L V8 TD 4.10 axle will tow 16,100 pounds.

What did Ford do to make such a significant increase? Thanks!

Welcome to the site!

In addition to bigger brakes, the V10 also got a power increase from 3-valve heads. The Torq-shift tranny also became available on the gas engines in '05. Can't remember for sure, but they may have also beefed up the frame.

Larger frame, larger brakes, larger diameter axle shafts in the rear, torqueshift addition to the gas engines, increased Hp & Torque. FMC included upgrades of many components on the 05 and later SD compared to the 04 and earlier SD.

La transmission automatique de décalage de couple est la raison primaire de l'augmentation de la capacité de remorquage.

Hmm.... possibly but the diesel platform got a large weight rating increase as well and the Torqueshift has been available on the diesel platform since 2003.

I was going to say the same thing blackhat. I think it's more related to a number of things than just a transmission upgrade.
