need help to identify my ford engine

Hi. I hope someone can help me out. I've researched for the past month and haven't gotten anywhere. Here are all the numbers I have found on my engine:
68H8
Block C7ME-A
Heads C8AE-H
Intake C9AE-9425-B
water pump C9AE-8505-A
exhaust C8AE-9431-B & C5TE-9430-O

It has a C marking under the intake on the block It has a 5 bolt valve cover. It was suppose to have came out of a Galaxie 500. Some has told me its a 428 & others have told me it's a 390. Any help is greatly appriceated. Thanks Kristy

390 ci was a 1961 model

406 and 428 came from 1963 and newer

didnt know if you had a year to the engine or not, and if its a 63 i guess we'd still be guessing.

alot of knowledgeable nutz on here so im sure you'll get some info back

thanks for the reply. If I checked the right #'s it showed me it's a 68 model block. I've checked so many #'s lately I can't keep up with them. lol someone also told me that the C9 & C8 #'s were a 68 & 69. I have no idea though. I never knew the trouble to identify an engine.

the block has a 67 casting number.
the easiest way to id your block is to check the bore and stroke. the 360 and 390 have 4.05 bores. the 360 has a 3.50 stroke. the 390 has a 3.78 stroke.

the 427 block has a 4.23 bore, and the 428 block has a 4.13 bore.

What is the casting mark on the front of the block, below the head, next to the water pump?
Also, is the intake under the valve covers?
An FE from a Galaxie can easily be a 352 also-

I have no way right now to check the bore of the cylinders. I don't have one of those things they use to do that.
What kind of marking should I be looking for on front of block, next to water pump? I found #'s C7ME-A & I found 68H8 on there somewhere.
My husband said the push rods went through the intake. Does that sound right? The valve covers are on the side (kinda) of the intake. I have a pic of it. Can you put them on here?
I guess you all can tell I'm new to all this. I never knew how much diffrent things are involved with engines.

I would suggest to try to find "Numberdummy" on these FTE boards. He posts alot on the 61-66 boards. He has knowledge and reference materials for just about everything and often lists Ford part numbers when he replies. Hope that helps. Good luck!

It is an FE then, but there should be a number on the front of the block, on the left hand side, just below the cylinder head. If it has power steering, the pump might be hiding the number. It should be either a a "352" or a mirror-image "105", that will break down some of the possibilities and rule out other engines.
"352" mark- 352,360, and 390 used this block.
"105" mirror mark- 390 and 428 used this mark. It is possible that someone put a 360 crank in it, but I wouldn't waste this block on that small of a displacement.

thank you all for the info. ya'll are great. I did find a 352 on the front of the block. it was upside down and backwards. I'm beginning to think it didn't come out of the galaxy like i was told. the waterpump on it is coming back to a cobra jet. did they put them on a 390?

Welcome to FTE

It's either a 360 or a 390. (360's used in trucks only).

All 352/360/390 blocks have 352 cast into the block.

390 used 1961/1971 in cars; 1968/1976 in F100/350's;

360 used in 1968/76 F100/350 only.

352 used 1958/1966 in cars; 1965/1967 in F100/350's.

FE waterpumps: 352/360/390/410/427/428. 1965/76: Original 1965 p/n: C5AZ-8501-C = replaced by >> C8AZ-8501-A = replaced by >> D0AZ-8501-D = replaced by >> D4TZ-8501-H. Whew! (Ford just loves to update part numbers )

The engine is prolly from a 1969 or 1970 model, but what did it come from? The casting number of the right exhaust manifold translates to: C5TZ-9430-A, and is off a 1965/69 F100/350 ~ 352/360/390. The right exhaust manifold and casting number changed in 1970 to >> D0TE-9430-A = Part number: D0TZ-9430-A.

Is there a carb ID tag, or a number stamped on the dizzy body, below the rim of the cap? Is the carb a 2 or 4V?

FE engines introduced in 1958.

Ford offered either a 332 or 352, Edsels offered a 361. FE = Ford Edsel
