E4OD Off Road Problem

I've owned my '92 F250HD 4x4 7.5L since new. The truck is stock except for a Banks intake and exhaust system.

From the beginning I've had a problem with the converter. When traveling slowly off-road (even on moderate grades) for a period of time; or when backing with a trailer up a grade, the converter overheats and spews trans fluid from inside the bell housing (not the top vent). I lose about a 1.5 quarts. After it cools, there is no leakeage of fluid. The trans temp stays normal (the guage is reading at the pressure test on the trans housing so it doesn't see the converter temp). There are no other signs of incorrect operation.

I had Banks install a Trans Command module (problem existed prior to install). I went to an oversized cooler and conducted a flow check that showed normal. Ford replaced the trans and converter in 1998 with the then latest E40D mods and it made no difference.

I've been to many trans shops and to Ford with the problem. Each time I've drawn a blank. Has anyone else had this problem? Any suggestions?

you traveling in 4HI or 4LO when traveling slow offroad? 4HI will allow it to heat up and build pressure and spurt out. Using 4LO puts everything in a lower gearing and that's what you need for going slow when offroading.

Exclamation

and i would HIGHLY recommend you add one of these trans pans to your rig...
http://www.mag-hytec.com/

it holds 2.5 more quarts than stock...AND it has a plug for a temp gauge!!

drj

i have the diff cover AND the trans pan...MAG-HYTEC produces vastly superior products to anything else ive found.

Thanks for both the replies.

re: 4L vs 4H, which gear position should be used? And, my trailer is an 8K bumper pull. If I go to 4L before backing can the transfer case take that load?

re: the extended pan, the Banks tube headers leave only 2" of clearance below the stock pan.

4LO for driving on dirt (offroad) at slow speeds. Backing? what's the problem with backing? can't you back up in normal 2wd? If it' a steep incline then i'd use 4LO backing.
