292 Engine in my truck

So I am looking through all the catalogs and it says that the engine is or could be a 272. Did the 56 f-250 come with a 292 as well?

I have the V VIN.

I was always led to believe that the '56 came originally with the 272.

56 or 57?

Well more research online it looks like my 56 is a 57??? My title says 56
But my door says 3/4 ton (7,400 GVWR max) which is a 57 f-250. What is the best way to tell the difference?

The 7,400 GVWR max is the GVW for a 3/4 ton, 56 or 57 doesn`t matter.

Gotcha.. so is it possible to have a 292 in a 56 as well? I guess it depends on what site I look at to get the information. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_F-Series has it right. Answers.com did not. So more likely than not I have the 272

Yes you have a '56 F-250, though some state's Required that vehicles be Registered as the Year that they were Sold in, which means this is more than likely the case w/ your truck.
The 272 was the standard Y-block for the F/M-series trucks til '59 when the 292 Y-block became the F/M-series standard till '64,
The 292 Y-block was used almost exclusively in the T-Bird & a few other High-end Ford & Mercury cars, though it could be Special Ordered for nice chunk of change for the era.
The 292 Y-Block engine was used in Argentina in the F-100 Pick-up well into the sixties, and was known as Fase I (Phase I). Later in the sixties, the engine was modified to accept a new-style cylinder head (very similar to the Windsor cylinder head) and was re-named the Fase II (Phase II). In this form, the 292 Fase II continued into the eighties in the F-100, and in addition, was also used in the Argentine Ford Fairlane (built from 1969 to 1982, and based heavily on American 1968 model).

Check out the data plate decoder that George has on "Earl's World".
http://www.clubfte.com/users/earl/Re...0VIN%20Decoder

It says that your "V" code is a 272. Lots of other good info there too.

Good Luck,

More than likely it is a 272. Mine is supposed to be in my 56.

Look at the block numbers and then go here. Then you will know.

Yours appears to be a 56 F-250 (based on the cab and the 8 lug wheels)
