Clay bar?

I have waxed every car i have owned and never used a clay bar or any type of polish and had the car shine really shine. Do you really need to use a clay bar and polish to get the new car shine?

How do you use the clay bar without scratching the paint?

I use the clay from Griots, lubricated with Speed Shine .... spray on the SS, 2 foot area or so, go over it with the flattened clay bar, wipe with a clean polishing towel. Does a good job of removing things you can't see ... but if you run your hand across a before and after section you can really tell the difference.

I use a Meguires Clay bar with the Maguiers lube. I was very skeptical before I used my first clay bar. If I had known the diff. it makes especially to the touch not to mention it seems to make it easier to wax and polish, I would have used one a lot sooner. I was blown away.

Wash and dry your truck, Make sure you spray the area first with the spray included, ( no bigger than 2' x 2') Rub the area with the bar, then dry with a clean cotton towel. After about 5 to 6 hours your done. Then re-wash the truck. Time to wax.

I do mine once a year, Takes the hole day.

I agree with all the above as far as application and results. I will never wax another vehicle without step two clay bar. I used the meg and it is very easy to do and well worth the time. Try it once and you will not go back to just waxing.

So I should wash, then clay bar, then wash, then wax. Wow that will take all day on my expedition. My wife's saab i could probably do pretty quick. I am assuming that doing this on a black metallic car would help get the swirls out?

Since you have swirls, I would recommend:
1. Wash
2. Clay
3. Polish (compound or swirl remover)
4. Wax

To take it a step further wax with a synthetic and come back 12-hours later with a carnuba (sp?) wax to seal. Do it right once and future applications will not take as long and you will be very pleased with the overall results.
