Brake parts for 1964 Fire truck

Have a 1964 Fire truck and need wheel clylinders and shoes. Advanced, Autozone, etc. say they do not have a listing for the fire truck. This is the first time I had to deal with a fire truck and do not know where to start. The only thing I know about the model is that it has a 700 on the from fender.
Can somebody please help and let me know where I can get the brake parts?
Thank you,
Alex

F700, which is a medium duty truck. I'd try suppliers of medium and heavy duty trucks in your area. Most auto parts houses do not catalog or supply parts for trucks that large.

Welcome to FTE

There are several different possibilities on what your truck is. What is the serial number listed on your title? Whatever the first three digits are will tell what it is.

C70 = C700 Tilt Cab

F70 = F700 Conventional;

N70 = N700 "short nose" Conventional

etc. Post what it is, I can decode it.

Brake shoes and kits..There are MANY different sizes available. Before you can order any of the parts, you must find out what size the brake shoes are, and what the front and rear axle weight capacity is. The trucks from rhe 1950's didn't offer so darn many sizes...as you can see.

Front brake shoes came in: 14 x 2 1/2" / 15 x 3" / 15 x 3 1/2" / 16 x 2 1/2"

Rear brake shoes came in: 15 x 4" / 15 x 4 1/2" / 15 x 5" / 16 x 5" / 16 1/2 x 4 1/2" / 16 1/2 x 6"

Axle code = Is there a VIN plate? If so, I will need the AXLE code that is listed. How many rear axles? One or two (tandem)?

It makes NO difference who you call, you will need all of the above info first.

I appreciate all the replies. This is the VIN F70MU541519, so I quess that it is the conventional. I know the shoes are 14 in.

Thank you,
Alex

Thank you,Alex
F70 = F700

M = 330 2V

U = Louisville KY Assembly Plant

541519 = 1964

I need the AXLE code off the door VIN plate.

Warranty #: F70MU541519 (VIN)<O></O>

WB: 174 <O></O> 174" wheelbase

Color: J <O></O> Rangoon Red

Model: F700 <O></O> F700 / 22,000 lbs GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating)

Body: 181A L <O></O> 1 = Grey Crush Vinyl / Light Grey Ribbed Vinyl / 81A = 81A = Standard Cab Too many digits listed for body code. 181A is correct, but the L is the trans code, as that is listed next on the VIN plate.

Trans Axle: G3 Actually this is just the axle code, see above and below for decodes and explanation.

Thank you again for all the help.

Alex
The trans code is? Ford seems to have stamped the body code and the trans codes too close together.

The trans code is L: Clark 5 Speed Direct

The axle code is G3: Eaton Two Speed / Ratios: 6.50-1 & 9.04-1 / 17,000 lb. Rear Axle Capacity. >> The Front Axle Capacity is: 5,000 lbs. <<

Note: On 1964/69 Ford trucks of F500 and larger size, if there are only two digits for the axle code, it means the front axle is the standard axle. If the axle code is three digits, the third digit refers to the front axle, which is heavier than standard. You have a two digit code, so the front axle was the standard production axle of 5,000 lbs. capacity.

If you go to any GOOD parts store, they will be able to look them up in a "BOOK", finding a parts guy that knows how to read may be your problem :-). I've never had a problem getting brake parts for the old F-600/700's.

Definitly try NAPA. I've got wheel cylinder and master cylinder rebuild kits and a wheel cylinder for my '66 F850 and they are very reasonably priced.
