Internal Voltage Regulator

I did a search and found a couple of hits, but most seemed to fade away before enough informaiton was shared. I have a 1973 460/C6 combo that i swaped into a 1964 F100. The alternator from the '73 was transplanted was well. On the truck side, it has a brand new electrical system including a brand new firewall mounted fuse block. To maintain the general schematic that I removed, I rewired the truck with the external voltage regulator (not really sure why, that has alwas been an issure since purchasing the truck). Now that its running, i noticed that with my headlights on, the ampmeter reads on the discharge side of neutral.

To simplify the entire thing I would liek to replace that alternator and external voltage regulator. Are there any model numbers tat you can share with me? A single wire would be real nice.

Increase your idle speed or use a smaller alternator pulley to increase the alternator output. A one-wire will do the same thing if it is turning too slow. Make sure your ammeter is wired correctly.

WHAT would be the ideal idle spped? Cant have the motor screaming....Also-i have a march pully set, which indicates underdrive on the accessories. I want to say though, the pulleys are failrly close in diameter.

The wiring for the external reg type alternator is very simple. Check yours out and see if it matches the diagram below. If it does, there are some tests we can do if you want to try to fix it.
