What would all be involved in swapping a 351M for a 351W or an FE in a 1977 F-150. Would significant modifications need to be made or not.

Transmission/or bellhousing would have to be changed for all the engine senarios you listed.

What I really wanted to know was about the motor mounts. Would mounts for a 351w or an FE simply bolt in? By the way it is a 2wheel drive if that makes any difference.

All those motors where available in that style frame, so with the correct motor mount they should bolt in. But there's lots of other stuff to consider like correct oil pans/dipstick locations, exhaust manifolds, and some of the smaller motors weren't available in a 4wd. I believe some of the guys on here have been having trouble finding headers or are having to make a custom exhaust for 4x4 trucks with the 351w/302 combinations for those years.

If the engine your swapping is out of a 4x4 you might have to change the pan and make your oil pump a front sump, instead of the rear sump.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 23-Aug-02 AT 01:37*PM (EST)]it would be easier to swap a 400 crank & pistons into the 351M, and make more power too!

Your best bet would be as stated above is to make a 400, or if you do want to swap engines go to a 460 that will use the same trans.

Then you can use the money you would have spent on a different trans. to get the proper motor mounts, oil pan, etc for the 460.
