I'm officially an Army Recruit

Well, I've been casually thinking about the Army for the past few years. Seemed like something I wanted to do, and that I could do. Only recently have I been more seriously thinking about it. Talked to many people about it, most think it'd be a good thing for me. So today I made the big step, and I'm officially an Army recruit. On Saturday I'm taking an aptitude test in the cities. My plans and requirements are as follows... I'll be in basic training for 9 weeks out of the summer, and then, provided I make it through, I'm committed to one weekend per month for the rest of the year doing drills. I'll be a reservist. Then after I graduate (which is REQUIRED), I'll still be on reserve for another 5 years (6 years total)... Unless I sign up for active duty, which I plan on doing... Then it's for 2 or more years of (most likely) being a combat engineer. Building roads, houses, hospitals, and infrastructure, and knowing how to take down condemned buildings/infrastructure... Clearing minefields with explosives, setting off IED's (safely from an armored vehicle)

So yeah, I'm officially an Army Recruit.

Then you can go to college for free and sign up for 6 more years and be an officer...

Good luck!

You're a good man, Nate.......Thanks for doing it.......Matt was kinda kidding around, it seems, but do take advantage of college while you're in and let the service pay for 3/4 tuition......You'll get a 2-year....even a 4-year degree before you know it.

Your recruiter will not tell you this, But, Start carring a 50# ruck sack on your back To get used to "Alice". When you exercise (and ya better start now!), wear alice. Go running, Take alice with ya. Start practicing to hold a rifle at arms length in front of you, Drill seargents love this. MEMORIZE your ranks, When i went through basic, While waiting in the chow line, the D.I.'s would hold up a flash card, If you got it wrong, to the end of the line you went.
Also, can you get out of bed, make your bed, get dressed, use the latrine, brush your teeth, get alice, and out side in formation in 15 minutes?????? Better get it down to 14 min.
But, above all, Thank you soldier for your service to our country!

Dont sweat basic, its not a nightmare or anything. Just get used to push ups, sit ups, and run run running. Also, start loving group punishment, because your stuck with idiots for 10 weeks! If 1 guy screws up, everyones screwed up. Ruck marches are fun too. But yeah, go to school when you get back from AIT, you get some decent extra pay (G.I. Bill) and it kinda helps out in keeping you from getting cross leveled (a unit somewere getting deployed, and they might be short on guys, so the "guys upstairs" randomly pick you out to go with them). Since your a split op you dont have to worry about that until after AIT, but if your going active duty anyways it wont matter.

Im in the reserves too, drills are lame, trust me. My best friend is at Ft. Benning in the Ranger Battalion, and another buddy in military intelligence. I beleive he's out of Airborne and is currently in Arizona for AIT. I went to Benning for basic and Leonard wood for AIT. You'll be at Leonnard wood for AIT too, get ready for boredom.
