Couple of questions before I trade my 6 oh

Well first of all, all you new 6.4 oil burning jockies, welcome to the club! I love my 2004 Dually 6.0 and she has never giving me any problems, other than a couple of flashes. Despite what many of you may have read here. the 6.0 is not junk. I just have to get a F-450 and was wondering if I can put any mods, like bigger exhaust, programmer and remove the DPF? I would diffenitly like to remove the Exhaust Gas Recirculation Cycle (or what ever it's called). Is there a way to de-program that?

Second, from what I have read. The 6.4 F-250/350 has a different program/tune than the mighty F-450? Different HP/TQ ratings? Thanks for the info.

P.S. I think, I'll have to change my name form "BIG DUALLY" to something else, since the 2008 F-450 are becoming the norm and my F-350 doesn't cut it anymore!

The exhaust is a hot topic on the new 6.4's. I've heard people have taken off the cat and DPF. They rewired the sensors so that there would be no check engine light, but some people who have done it are now getting a regen cycle that will not cut off. Major problem. Aparently the truck will do a regen cycle after a certain about of time even if it dosn't read high backressure before the DPF. And since the DPF isn't there there is not enough heat build up for the heat sensor to shut off the regen cycle. Resulting in a constant regen, which kills your mileage, and can't be good for the motor.

The only HP and torque differences is with the 450. You get 350 HP & 650 torque with 250's, 350's, and 450 automatics with 4.30 rear gears. If you decide to go with the 4.88 rear end or the 6-speed manual in the 450 the HP is dropped to 325, and torque to 600.

The 450's are some nice rigs but from what people have been saying the fuel mileage is horrible, especially with the 4.88's. 8-14 mpg. Check out the thread: F450 highway stability to read some other issues coming up. Good luck on the truck.

If your not in too much of a hurry for a new truck as yours still has low miles on it I think you out to wait and hold on to a tried and true runner. Not to say that these 6.4 aren't but there is a lot of questions left unanswered about them. Your truck will get better fuel mileage and you wont have to worry about the ULSD. You have a Flashpaq and you are probably pushing more Power and torque than the 6.4 is stock. You can get programmers for the 6.4 but they also have yet to be tested. I suggest you wait if you can especially since you seem very happy with your current setup....

that's just my opinion and that usually doesn't mean to much around here!!

Speaking form 5500 miles of experience in a new F450 w/4:88's.....several of the statements I find factual, while others have not reared up in my truck.....First Mileage. Keeping it at about 55 mph or 2000 rpm, I've seen as high as 14.3 however the running average is closer to 11.6. Towing (5500# front axel, 6500 rear and 10,300 trailer axle) I average 9.2 mpg.
As far as highway stability......I have never had an issue even running 70-75 mph on the highway. Never have I had anything except sure footed motoring with this truck.

Agreed, NO Mods is the resonse from Ford and I intend to honor that. This truck runs great, handles well and although on backroads rides like a buck board, I love it.

Bare in mind this truck is NOT my daily driver, it's life is presently going to revolve around towing my fifthwheel and occassionally hunting trips North and West.

Bottom line is I very much like this truck and feel absolutely solid towing with it.

SouthTexasDiedel, Enomra and Strut61 thanks for the info. I appreciate your feedback. Though I am happy with my truck, I see the new F-450 and they are awsome! I love that beefy Dana 110 on rear! Strut61, I like your new F-450, very nice rig. I'm just leary of then new 6.4. The 6.4 has a lot of smog stuff and wonder if you can tinker with it. The 6.4 is nothing more than a bored 6.0 with improved mods on the engine and twin turbos. I see Ford rolled back the powertrain warranty coverage from 100,00 to 60,000 miles. I'm sure due to people using programers, water injection, propane and NOS on a International VT365 that was allready overtuned by Ford. Too much stress on that 6.0. I plan on trading my 2004 dually later this year. Oh, and I want the 6.4 to be loud clanker like my 6.0. Diesels should be loud, not quite like a gasser! thanks again guys.

The 6.4 motor is warranted for 100,000 miles. The tranny is warranted for 60,000.

Couldn’t be much happier trading in my 99 for the 450, like Strut said it is not the greatest daily driver for fuel mileage. But it makes you feel like king of the road driving it. A 350 DRW with 4.10s will result in better fuel mileage if it is a concern. Just driving over 2,000 rpms cuts in to mileage. It would be nice if Ford came out with a double overdrive for when we run empty. Almost traded a couple of years ago for the 6.0 but decided to wait and glad I did. Sorry though you won’t get the loud clanging. They are pretty quiet, on the highway it is quieter than my V10 was. Did I tell you how much I like this truck?

Yea, I get an average of 15-15.5 mixed 70% freeway/30% street driving. Of the 70% freeway, that is Kalifornia traffic! I usaully cruse around 65-70 MPH and soft starts and coast when comming to a stop.

Firehawk198, I liked Strut61's rig, it's nice. But I like your F-450 more, because of that Dark Torador Red. Very nice rig Firehawk.
