Guns n Ammo
Hey all you shooters
I went down to my local gun shop and was buying some ammo.
My favorite ammo is the .223 round for my plinkin gun.
They tell me, that the ammo went up lots due to it also being the favorite round being used up abroad.
right now at my gun shop the rounds are about 3 times normal price from a year ago.
Now is this true all around or is my little shop feedin me a line?

Nope, it is true, but not only for that reason. A lot of the surplus dried up as the UN has been strong arming couonties like South Africa to stop the sales of Mil surplus stuff. That bough new production prices up. As well as what is being used up in the wars.
My fav round is the 7.62x51 close cousin to the the .308, a couple of years ago it was like $12 to $15 a battlepack (140rd FMJ surplus) now it is all gone with the exception of a few capalistic types selling for the $70 tp $80 range.

I thought about that also. I caught the bug for belt fed guns, so when I shoot, I tend to go thru 1000 rds without much problem. There is a LM7 .22 belt fed conversion for the AR style rifles though
There is some good news on the horizon though, at least concerning new production, PMC just got out of banruptcy, and my son brought home some PMC .223 the other day, so that should help replentish the lines of supply, and I believe that the gov't recently signed contracts which opened up three new production lines, so that should be a big help.

I would use a .30-06 with 220 grain ammo. That's if I was firing. Home defense varies upon what's closest if I owned a gun. Too bad I love these type posts but I can't speak on them much.
Nothing on y'alls level though. Wish I were there.

maybe i should buy a .22 to keep the hobby cheap

How is the Silver Bear stuff from Cheaper than Dirt? Is it worthwhile, or should I actually spend the money for good ammo? I'm not to worried about fouling, since I do clean with Eezox.

Haha, Hell yea, I got a .22 marlin I've had for about 11 years now, since I was 13, I LOVE that little sucker, fun as hell to shoot. I remember about 2 years ago when I bought my Nagant I also picked up a tin of 440 surplus 7.62x54 for like $32, but like I say, that was 2 years ago, still got a large ***** of it too...LOL

It must also be remebered that this was during a transistion between black powder and modern powder.
I am getting older, and memory is not like it was when I was studying gunsmithing, so correct me if I am wrong.

I have a Marlin 336A (1969 production) chambered in the 30-30, my only lever action, bought it a few months ago just as a lark. (or maybe I had been watching too many old westerns!) I have only shot it once, and I was suprised at the amount of kickback it has. Nothing like my son's 45-70 Marlin, but still suprising in comparison to my various 7.62x51 / .308 rifles.
I seem to have a afinity for 30 cals - I do have one 9mm and one 22LR, but the majority of what I own are various 30 cals or 7.62. I have about <gasp> as much fun and interest in guns as I do my Ford trucks
Interesting subjects that come up on a Ford site But then I feel that we are more of a community, with many interests, the diversity of which I am a fan! I am on a couple of other gun orientated forums by the same handle, dmanlyr, a handle that I have been using since the old BBS pre web days You just might see me out there.
