old diesel bad for new engines?

Ok, read about the new diesel being introduced (ULSD) in the US and the new engines coming out to complement this new fuel.

My question is a bit opposite of the usual questions. I don't foresee our little Island getting the new diesel (cost vs. power plant is main consumer) and was told the new engines would have difficulty running on the more sulfur laden diesel.

I want to get a F-250 super duty(diesel obviously) and if there is any truth to this comment, what years/engines should I avoid.

Or....should I just get a gas powered vehicle. Won't be going long distances, but will be hauling boats, horse trailers, ect.

Thanks!

Any diesel built after January 2007 or later is equipped with new emissions equipment that requires ULSD fuel. If you run LSD (500 ppm sulfur) you will clog the particulate filter and will not be covered under warranty.

F350 is spot on. If availability of ULSD is a concern, then stick to a 2007 or earlier model.

If you want a 6.0 then avoid 03 and very early 04 as they had problems but most of those have been fixed by now. Also avoid chipped vehicles as they have been overpowered - which could pose problems. Folks here will help you by running a report as to what the vehicle has had done from ford. It is called an Oasis report.

Thumbs up LSD diesel

Useful information! Thanks guys! Now the search starts for the better 'used' truck.

One query though: Consider 2007 or avoid 2007- two answers seemed to conflict.

Mucho thanks again.

07 is good until the new engine requirememts came into play starting Jan 07 BUT if the engine has a build date of 12/06 your good to go. Only way is to look on the left side tappet cover to find the date tag. There was a lot of engines produced prior to 12/06 in anticipation of the new requirements and higher engine costs.

Actually, I believe refineries are required to produce at least 80% ULSD now, but retailers are not required to sell it until 2010.

If you go to www.flyingj.com and go to diesel pricing it has a lot of truck stops selling both fuels and a few selling biodiesel.
