Transmission fluid in the fuel tank??

I was at the dealership having them fix a stupid $150 mistake I made. While there, I was talking to the Diesel Tech and we were talking about injectors (03 6.0...common discussion). He just got back from a 6.4 training meeting and they were talking about the benifits of adding transmission fluid to the fuel tank of the 6.0. He told me no more than 3 quarts of transmission fluid per tank. He said not to do it every time but ever few fills. He said they have seen sucess with this treatment. I told him about Diesel Kleen and he had reservation about it. I am new to diesels and wanted to see your thoughts on this.

Well if your diesel tech prefers automatic transmission fluid in the fuel tank instead of DK or another approved fuel additive, i would not even let him sit in my truck let alone work on it. You need to find a new Qualified & Competent 6.0 diesel tech. This guy is smoking the drapes.

weber7, please PM me the name of the dealership where this guy works as I just moved to SoCal and I never want to take my truck there!! Adding ATF was a common practice in older diesels, but not with the 6L. I'd stick to the known fuel additives to help keep the injectors lubricated instead of ATF.
Also, do a search on this subject and you'll be able to read the mechanical reasons as to why we don't add ATF to the fuel of the 6L.

Well, let me start by saying "Welcome to the site!"

After that, you'll by now noticed that the guys are pretty serious about their diesels. I too am new to the diesel world and joined the site when I was sure that I had found the PSD I wanted. In the short time I've been on the site the advice and info given has been great...and worth being kicked around as a newbie.

The moral of my story....ask the question and read BEFORE you do something to the truck you'll be sorry for later! The other part of the moral is second opinions are not only allowed...for the sake of your investment, they're desired.

Good luck Pal.

That's an old time truckers deal, trans fluid in the fuel was supposed to help clean and lube the injectors. That was back when (50's to 70's) injectors operated are far lower pressure than modern (90's+) Diesel injectors.

Please don't put any trans lube in your Diesel tank!

I use Diesel Kleen or Stanadyne treatment with every tank, you may want to consider this as well. The 6.0 injectors use the engine oil to operate so you may also want to consider using synthetic oil and be sure to use Racor/Motorcraft manufactured oil filters. Lotsa threads on that subject!

Hopefully that won't start an oil/filter debate...

Here are several reasons NOT to use ATF fluid in your diesel fuel.

1) Is not advised by Ford - warrenty denial.

2) Will screw up your injectors.

3) Will "tint" your fuel red and DOT may think you have off-road diesel in your tank.

4) Will or may affect your emissions sensors as they are not expecting to see this kind of "fluid".

I would get the dealership's mechanic and service manager to get that in writing... if nothing else... just for kicks and send it to Ford Motor Company asking them about their training programs??

Use a name brand diesel fuel additive that contains no alcohol and is designed for diesels. The most popular ones are PowerService (dieselkleen), Howes, Stanadyne and a few others.
