Flathead 6 cylinder.

I have a 1951 F-6 with a 254 cu. in. "M" series flathead 6,, that is cracked.. I was curious if anyone knows whether any newer OHV engines would couple to this bellhousing, or even if a newer engine/bellhousing would couple with this 4 speed transmission.. I am not concerned about mounts of any kind.. I can manufacture what that would require,, just the coulping together.. Thanks for any help anyone can give.

Well since it ain't gonna be original anyway I say just get a complete driveline radiator to driveshaft. Then you don't have to mickey mouse around and then you can put in a synchronized 4/5 speed transmition So then you won't have to double clutch like the original tranismittion.

An F-6 would have the 4-sp crashbox, wouldn't it? I would suspect that a 300-6 could be adapted and its torque would be appropriate for an F-6. Colonel Flashman??

Ross,

The syncronized transmission was offered as an option I believe in the F-4 and up in '48 and came standard in the bigger trucks in '51. I have had a couple of bigger model '51s and '52s and they had the syncronized trannies. You can tell by the shift pattern, the non-syncro tranny shifts over and down for reverse, the syncro tranny shifts over and up. The syncronized trannies are also a bit longer.

The 300 might be a little too long to fit into engine compartment without remounting the radiator even farther forward than it is with the flat six. I don't know this for sure, I am sure someone with let us know if they have done this.

My tranny is T98 and it shift to the right and back towards the seat. I don't believe it is a synchronized tranny. When I drive it I grind the hell out of the gears, and I usually can drive anything.

Time for a tranny overhaul Kevin. Look at page 353 in your parts catalog. The T98 has second, third and fourth gear syncros. The syncro blocker rings are brass, and are prolly worn down to a nub. Worn syncros = double clutch time.
