Thumbs up Original 1987 230k mile Ford/LuK clutch (pics)!

I think this clutch served my Dad, and I very well over the last 20 years! The only problem I found was the pilot bearing was shot and had fallen apart.

I would say you and your Dad know how to use a clutch.

How did it act with that pilot bearing out? must have been binding the input shaft.

If I put my ear to the shifter, running in -N-, I can barely hear the shaft turning. I'd say this overhual was just in time. I will check the input shaft for wear/play and report back if you all care.

I'm just shocked how much beef is still on this clutch and how long it has lasted. I'd say 20 years at 230k miles is awesome!

My Dad owned the truck since new and then gave it to me about two years ago.

So the OEM Ford clutches in those days were by LuK? I had a 1990 F150 with 225K on it when I sold it and it still had the original clutch, too. Those things are tuff.

Well, great for me, then. My current truck has a LuK clutch in it, too. It came with the ZF I bought. The guy told me it only had about 5K miles on it, and it looked great, so I just re-used it.

I'm sure it'll be fine.

I'll second that.

I replaced one on a truck I bought. At 150k, it was about 500 miles away from slipping. Some of those rivet heads were a hair width below the friction surface.

Ain't it the truth . I put 220K on my '89 F150 before I sold it (with the original clutch). I still remember my old man brow-beating me on how to use the clutch when he taught me how to drive.

I'd go so far as to say with a good driver, these clutches could go 300k miles.

Yeah, and exactly why I ordered another LuK brand clutch for the rebuilt 306HO.

Just want to give you guys a heads up to not buy a clutch from www.dialaclutch.com because they have shady advertising that looks like you're going to get a LuK clutch, but they may send an off-brand.

The first clutch they sent me was not a LuK clutch. It was totally wrong since it was a 10.5" and the brand was Valeo. Valeo is a good clutch brand, but is not what I asked for. The second clutch they sent me was an 11" which is the correct size, but it is a no name off-shore Chinese clutch. Both clutches were shipped loosely in a generic box. I'll post pictures later.

I called LuK and they responded within the day wanting to talk to me. I sent photo's and links to the site where they use a LuK part number and if you click the link, it shows a LuK RepSet. Where it gets shady is when you click buy, it changes the description in the checkout basket to "original quality clutch." But they told me this isn't the first complaint from this company and that they are going to see if they can take any action. He said they will contact me and keep me up to date on it.

The clucth was still good in my 87 F150 with over 230K on it, and it was hardly wore at all, and ALOT of those miles were pulling stock trailers. I went ahead and replaced it when I had my motor overhauled, but it wasn't even close to needing it.

DOHC330MustangGT said "My Dad owned the truck since new and then gave it to me about two years ago."

Oh SURE! Your old man drove it for eighteen years with no problems and then, what, after just two short years you manage to frag the thing?

Just shows that with the proper care and nuturing well built vehicles can and do go a long way.

Cheers!

Mike
