If he wants to be firm on his price and if he is asking more than what I think it`s worth I won`t make any or low ball offer.
Sometimes I`ve lost deals because of this.
There was a fairly decent 53 F100 for sale 6/7 years ago, the asking price was about $700. I wanted to offer $500 but didn`t want to insult the owner, later on I found out he sold it for $350!

I would start by telling him you do want to deal, but you want to be realistic about it. I have dealt this way before, and pointed out to the guy, politely, what all was wrong with it for me to buy it at the price he was asking. Most of the time I was able to get a fair price too. There was a few guys that just didnt budge though.
