Wheel bearing question on 97
I repacked the front bearings when I replaced my brakes on my 97. I had the discs turned and had to clean out the hubs to make sure no hub material was in there. The races and bearings were good.
If I had to replace the races, how do you get them out of the hub? Can you hammer in the new races or do you have to take them to have them pressed in? Do the races usually wear out or can you use the old ones? Thanks

the bearings are pressed into the hub. normally you can drive them in with a hammer and a brass punch or a round block the right size, like a big socket. dont use anythingn too hard or strike at an angle where you can put a ding in the edge of the race.... the race should be replaced with the bearing. after several hundred thousand revolutions of the bearing, the race is just a thousanth or two thinner. this takes the hard surface off the race and minor flaws into the face. look real close and you will see very minor pits. Eventually the pits will start to break down and flakes will appear and lager pits will form. It is possible to reuse the race, but normally not done when you install a new bearing.
