Looks like a Ford 9" axle with 3.50 gears on an open carrier.

Are you certain the code is WD H-BZ? There is no listing for this code in any 1957/89 Truck parts catalog, and nothing in any 1957/79 Ford car parts catalog. The WD portion is late 1960's/1970's. The only catalog I don't have is 1973/79 Lincoln-Mercury, so if that wd H is correct, I suspect that what the center section is from.

Thanks for catching that. Upon closer inspection it does look like an 'H' but on the back of it where its stamped thru its clearly an 'M'. So I cleaned the rest of the dirt/grease out and indeed it is 'WDM'. What difference does the M make if any? Thanks!!!!!

Is there a site that can decode these? I want to decode mine but I don't want to bother someone to do it for me.

The difference is...the rear axle ID tag can now be decoded!

WDM-BZ = Ford 9 Inch / 3.50-1 / Non Locking

FTE has axle decoders for the VIN plate axle codes. I'm not sure if the FTE decoder can decode the rear axle tag, which this WDM-BZ is. but Mil1ion and I (and prolly others here) can decode the rear axle tags. Both of us are using Ford parts catalogs. It's not a bother to decode them for y'all, it takes less than a minute.

On your Warranty (VIN) Plate is the AXLE code. You can post it, or try the FTE decoder.

1977 production began in July/August 1976, so a May 1977 build date would not be early production.

Thanks for the info NumberDummy!! I was hoping for an early production front axle, I wanted those 1/2" axle tubes. Another question for you is where do I find my serial number for the truck? Is that what the Y56245 number is? Thanks!

The entire VIN (F14BNY56245) is the serial number.

Reason I am trying to figure this out is, I have been looking in my parts catalogs. Some of the parts I was looking at are for certain serial numbers but they don't look like the VIN numbers. I hope you undertand what I am talking about.

Yes, in the 1973/79 truck parts catalogs..only the last letter/numbers of the VIN are refered to. For example, all high boy production ended at Y20,000. In the earlier 1964/72 catalogs, from 1964/66 there is a 6 digit serial, no letter applies. The letter/number code wasn't used till 1967. Example 1964/66: F10DR123456. R is the assembly plant...San Jose, CA. Only the 123456 is used for parts changes.
