I've read the article several times and agree John does a great job. My problem is I'd like to mount a gas tank in the rear but don't want to remove the freshly varnished wood bed and stainless strips I worked hard on to install. I'm trying to figure out a way of mounting this tank from underneath so it is also easily removed, similar to the newer F150 trucks. I was wondering if the gas tank kits that No Limit sells go in easy without removing everything. They claim they have a 16 gallon that fits right in. Would love to see other versions of gas tank installs.

Nice job on the tank install. I wonder because of the long flat run of your filler tube under the bed you may end up with a very slow filling tank. Let us know how it works out.

Chuck is right

years ago at the Nats (@ P.F.) I saw a '56 with a rear tank and he had fabbed a cute little door under the tailgate...above the tag... neat little drop down door and all...

But his comment was it was bad to back up on you (lack of vent) and very slow to fill..

First of all, Thanks for all the replies and great idea. So far I've added a 1/4" tube vent to the filler neck and just now finished adding a 1/4" vent to the tank. It looks much like John's picture on his Tech article addition from yesterday. Mine is not quite as high tech. I used a elbow and a 1/4" swagelok fitting and ran a copper line out to the wheelwell. I had put in a gallon of gas the other night so I was chickens__t to try to mig it so I used my old favorite JB Weld and I will let it cure for 24. I hope its not slow to fill. I have a friend who had a 73 F100 who says he used to carry a wood block with him, drove up on it to slightly raise the side where the filler was to help the fill. I hope to have my tags by the weekend and make a trip to the gas pump. I'll take some pics of this RubeGoldberg like mod tomorrow.

Congratulations on figuring out your vent method. Sounds like a good plan. JB Weld has saved the day many times. I'm sure it will be fine.

I was a little concerned about filling time when I saw the geometry of the fill tube. Your setup was the first I've seen that used a Mustang tank and a side fill. Pretty ingenious. However, if the fill height of the cap is decent, the only problem will be the restriction you have where the tube turns into the tank. Let us know how it works out.

Ed, No Limits install kit include some sheet metal clips that slide over the frame before you mount the tank. They support a threaded nut in place and you lift the tank and install bolts from the bottom through a flange on the side of the tank. easy to do. I,ve had mine in and out twice since I finished the bed.

PS mine is their 21 gal version but requires the rear cross member to be moved back.

Thanks, that's exactly what I was looking for. I already contacted No limit and he will be bringing some examples of the tanks to the Western Nationals for me. BTW- See you there!

Gas Tank Install Finished

Finally got my tank installed, and vented. I tried filling it and it seems to be no problem the gas runs right in and the filler seems to be ok. I was able to get the truck started right up and I drove it around the neighborhood illegally. I sure wish my license plate would show up soon.

Thanks for everyones help and answers to my questions. I posted a picture in my gallery showing the vent line.

Dennis,

Glad to hear you got in installed and were able to take a trip around the block.

When I got my truck running I did the same thing, made several trips around the block (some of them with excessive tire smoke) before breaking down and getting it licensed, insured, etc

filler to tank

Dennis;

what did you use to attach filler neck to tank, it does not look like the stock Mustang rubber grommet that attaches to the tank. Does your tank have the lower left side sender unit ?

Hello Tom,

I used a Home Depot rubber elbow from the plumbing dept to connect the tank to the filler tube.
The sending unit is in the middle of the tank in the front.
