Not that my motor was dirty, but I have found a way around hosing it off. I bought some glass cleaner and tooth brushes from the dollar store. The glass cleaner cut the grease pretty well. Then following a trick I read on another forum, I sprayed the compartment down with glass cleaner and mother's preserves (I used what I had, but the recipe is suposed to be armoral and windex.) The hoses and the rest is very shiney.

I do mine in the early morning after the vehicle has sat overnight, plus it is not hot outside. I spray the engine down with Grease Lightning, then immediately spray off with water. I then hand wash any needed areas and toothbrush any hard to get spots. Spray totally again with Grease Lightning and rinse. I let it dry, then use Stoner's More Shine Spray. Makes everything shine and does not leave the thick residue. After I spray with Stoner's, I start the engine for about 30 seconds. That is about all it needs to cook off any extra.
Looks good!
When my upper rad hose blew and completely coated my engine compartment with antifreeze it cleaned really nicely.. lol Bit sure why but when I was cleaning the mess it just took all the crud off
