Ford variable venturi OEM 2-bbl carb
The two external diaphrams on the VV carb are easy to replace and solve most of there trouble. One is the choke pull off{what a name!} and the other is the venturi diaphram which are still available in any carb kit brand. If that doesn't work,Holley does make VV replacement that maintain the original intake,EGR spacer plate{dont forget to change this gasket everytime you loosen the carb which could be your problem anyhow}distributor and PCM{processor} for about $350 to $400 {ouch!}.

I can't imagine 6 bills for a rebuild on a VV.I sure hope it lasts for a while.Back on the Holley VV repacement, this carb. replacement is NOT a high performance modification, and, retains all of the original emission devices as well as the processor{computer}.Allthough I am not familiar with California laws, why wouldn't Holley or the state allow such a replacement and still be CARB legal?

You Have to Order the Holley VV
California will take the Holly VV carb as it is CARB certified replacement. However, you will have to order it from Holley (or a 3rd party). They only assemble these as a special order, so be prepared to wait (mine took 2mos!). Yes, the price is steep: $325 is what I paid 3 yrs ago.
Another alternative would be to switch over to a 2-barrel TBI setup. You can grab the parts Pick-n-Pullin at your local bone yard. The referee WILL accept it if you've been careful to document the whole swap and bolt it on as a complete system. (You can call the state, and they'll send you the guidelines in the mail) I like my Holley 2bbl, but if I were to do it over again, I think I'd go the TBI route.
