If you leave the stock cats in place, you can run dual flowmasters and it will be fine.
It will sound ok.

One of my good friends has a '99 F-150 with the 4.2L, doesn't sound too shabby with a Flowmaster 40. It's not a V8 by any means...but it sounds pretty good for a six (Flowmaster sounds much better on the 4.2L than my 4.0L IMO).

Warning: I know nothing about mufflers:

Does the Flowmaster you are talking about just replace the existing muffler? Like they chop out the old one and weld in a new one? How much does it cost to have this done, or can I do it myself? (The existing muffler seems kinda big.)

I have a flowmaster catalog here. Which model did your friend have. There are several 40 series models. Can you describe the sound?

I hope that isn't too many questions!

I'll try sending it again.

Xyzzy, multiple styles are available. There are drop in replacements, where you just remove the old muffler and weld in a replacement. You can do this yourself if you have skills with a welder, though you may need some pipe as well. There are also cat back systems, which replace everything after the catalytic converter(s). These also, can be installed by you, if you know how to use a welder or just use clamps.

He has the 40 series delta. It's got a good rumble too it, deep and sounds like basically every Flowmaster vehicle known to mankind lol. If you drop me a PM or an email from here I can send you a couple of sound clips of it.
